Why do they still play Conference Champ games?

Not really. But try to ween the conferences, the network, and the host cities off that money. Won’t happen.
Yeah, and I suppose with as large as they are getting, it’s hard to really determine who’s the actual ‘champion’ if the two haven’t played each other.

There is noise that the SEC wants to play two games on Championship weekend (3/4 in the afternoon & 1/2 in the evening) to provide the CFP committee clear differentiation if the conference is getting 3 into the CFP. ESPN would be favor of it. Hell our friends in Oxford might even make it to Championship Weekend under this scenario one day.

Incredibly bad idea. Hope they don’t do it. Won’t help the SEC.

For some conferences, the game meant little this year.

For the B12 and acc, the games everything to AzSt and Clemson. However SMU probably isn't in favor.

Point is, some years for some teams the conference championship means nothing. For other schools, it is everything.

Elite programs like Texas and Georgia still want to win the SEC championship game. People like Kiffin say the game doesn’t matter and that they don’t want to play in the game and then lose to Kentucky, LSU, and Florida with the best roster in program history and the easiest schedule in the conference.

Stupid thing for Kiffin to say. Your school hasn't won an SEC title since 1963, and you don't want to play for a conference championship and a bye in the playoffs. Right.

I honestly think the eventual solution will be the NFL style playoff system after the super conference/division whatever you call it is formed. It’s the death of college football as we know it, but being objective and removing my bias from it, college football has been much more entertaining this year than in recent history. I hate the portal and I hate the mega-conferences, but as someone just tuning in to watch with no dog in the hunt (literally, thanks to our woes), the season has been much more entertaining than any I can remember in a long time.

It shows that their goal was to make the CFP, nothing more. If you have aspirations beyond making the CFP, of course you want to be in Atlanta.

Texas, Georgia, and Tennessee woke up this morning needing four wins to win the national title. Georgia is now three wins away. Texas and Tennessee still need to win four.

They should have a 12-team playoff. Surely, that will be enough teams to eliminate all the controversy.

That will get rid of all the problems.

I don’t think there would be any controversy of it wasn’t for Alabama. And I honestly think we still see them through the lens of Saban. I doubt they are serious contenders but it’s hard to think they won’t just flat out run the table because of their rep.

Which is the big issue with the committee and everybody else……they give Bama preferential treatment because of past performance.

You just witnessed why you play the Conference Championships
Great games, more games, more money and it incentives teams on the “bubble”
And, who doesn’t want to play for a Championship ?
Isn’t that a goal at the start of every season, to win your championship?

This was most likely the best Saturday of the season. Teams fighting for a championship and maybe a place to keep their season alive.

It was started because other conferences were doing it to get more teams in the big bowl games. It is also a good revenue generator. Yesterday's game locked UGA and Texas into the CFP. Georgia had to win to accomplish the feat and by a slim margin. Mission accomplished!

A lot of the talk in Georgia was how UGA didn't need the game, it could only hurt them, why play it, etc. That talk all changed after the game.

That UGA win was an all-time classic. Their team was held together by duct tape and baling wire.

If you looked at the first half stats, UGA shouldn't have even been in the game. Then they have to roll out their second string QB and third string place kick holder (same guy, but still)

It’s all about the $$$. Wait until Private Equity gets involved and starts making players sign non-competes in order to get the really big money.
