Is it? You can win the Sun Belt there.
The past 3 Sun Belt champions have been Troy, Troy, and Louisiana Lafayette. I don't see that big of a gulf between the Buzzards and those schools. They would be wise to go hire Hudspeth and put a padlock on the man's trousers.

ETA - I forgot we have to play them at the Rock to open the 2025 season.

They haven’t won a conference, either CUSA or Sun Belt in nearly a decade and a half. They haven’t come close since they moved to the Sun Belt.

USM in a previous life could compete in their conference but they aren’t the same as they were in the 80s. Once Fedora left for greener pastures they were left for dead.

Damn good idea. He knows the southern AL area.

But Hall knew Louisiana too. Who knows.

Hudspeth would be a disaster. They’d do better to re-hire Hopson.

Maybe, but this century just seems like one big slide for USM to me. They used to mix it up with Tulane & Memphis, and it wasn’t shocking to see them beat the occasional SEC team for a recruit.

Now, not only have all those schools separated themselves from USM, but they also got South Alabama added to their recruiting footprint.

They just seem stuck to me.

Jeff Monken makes 2 mil a year. Would he leave army and go to USM? He’s always been at or near the top of my preferred list for us for a long time.

I went to a few games at the rock when I lived near Hattiesburg in early 2000s, always enjoyed it. Remember one year they played Cal at end of the year (must have been rescheduled due to hurricane or something, was played in early December). They went toe-to-toe with a top 5 Cal team that had Aaron Rogers, JJ Arrington, and Marshawn Lynch.

Seems like the game was close enough that it dropped Cal below Texas in the rankings and knocked them out of whatever bowl they were competing for, there were Texas fans at the game with USM signs.

USM Should not exist.
^^^^This^^^^ along with MVSU, Delta State, Alcorn State and The W.
Combine MVSU & Delta State into Ole Miss, Combine Alcorn and The W into MSU and combine all the Community colleges in the bottom third of Mississippi into the campus at Hattiesburg.

Will is smart and a good coach. He’s been successful everywhere he’s been outside of USM . I’m really surprised he couldn’t turn them around. I’d be willing to bet that he wasn’t the primary problem.

Southern Miss has the 2nd lowest athletic budget in the Sunbelt, only ahead of La. Monroe. It's one of the lowest budgets in all the FBS. In the world of NIL and in the near future the revenue sharing with players, they dont have the funds to compete.

The problem that USM has now is the competition for recruits from Troy and South Alabama. Those two are getting a LOT the decent SEC rejects from the Panhandle, Southern AL, and Southern MS that USM used to have pretty much to themselves.

Don’t know about Mrs Duff but the Duff brothers are USM fans or at least that’s what I have been told.

I don't. But if an analyst has nothing to do with winning or losing, why have an analyst?
You have him crunch analytical numbers on a handful of games and shadow in practice. When a position coach of ours leaves you fill it with him. Hypothetically, he’s been in the program and would understand the culture and what’s expected.
