I know most of you aren't tennis fans but this is very cool. They play around 11:30 this morning. I will be tuned in.. Toby also tried to qualify for singles. Had a great showing but came up short.

South Carolina men’s tennis student-athletes Connor Thomson and Toby Samuel have received a Wild Card into the Doubles Main Draw at the 2023 edition of The Championships

Pretty cool to have some Gamecocks in there.

I was pretty into tennis back in the 90s when the US had some good men's players going...Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Michael Chang, Jim Courier, and you had the tail end of McEncroe and Connors. On the women's side you had Monica Seles, Lindsay Davenport, Jennifer Capriati.

I don't follow tennis much at all anymore, but on the men's side, it doesn't seem like we've much there for quite a while.

I don't consider Seles a US player but you can argue it. We do have some very good young US players such as Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula. On the men's side we have Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe. All four are in the top 10.

If you haven't watched Tiafoe play, you are missing out.

It's hard not to pull for Alcaraz and Rudd. My boys favorites along with Tiafoe.

haha, yeah, Seles is debatable, at best, but the women's side was kind of light.

For the men, in the 90s, you had the overlap of Sampras (best US men's player ever), Agassi, McEnroe, Connors and Courier... arguably 5 of the top 10 best American men's players ever, all going at the same time.

Like I said, I don't really follow it much now, but every time I hear about who won a major, it seems it's Silovan Milosovebidic or something.

I was watching intently during the McEnroe - Connors era but hardly at all since then. That period was very entertaining and even had me and my wife playing some tennis.

Won the first set 7-5 after being down 3-4. Up 2-0 in the 2nd. This would be a great win.

I can probably Google it but can "amateur" college players accept prize money in professional tournaments? In the past amateur players couldn't accept prize money in professional events w/o risking college eligibility. With top players getting paid NIL $$'s, has the rules changed? Wondering if these two gamecocks get a payday if they win a match or two.

I cannot see how it is substantively any different than NIL.

Up 5-3 in the 2nd. Looking good.

Tiafoe is playing on ESPN if you want to see some good tennis.

Gamecocks advance. It's pretty cool to see them play at USC a month or two back and then playing on grass at Wimbledon.
