...Why on earth is television coverage limited to what is shown here?: Link

I would think potential ratings would demand wire to wire coverage. I know I'd have it on every second I was near a television. Anyone know why it's not shown more? I'm sure it's Martha Burke's fault somehow.

we already know who is going to win and he is the same guy that has ruined golf.

/sarcasm.

I actually read a thread a few weeks ago arguing this point. It was also stated that Michael Jordan ruined pro basketball. Unreal.

was that the MEDIA has made golf nearly unwatchable due to its constant fellatio of Tiger Woods.

Is Tiger Woods the best golfer of all time? - in all likelihood, yes he will be when he surpasses Nicklaus' majors record.
Do I need Jim Nantz telling me how f'n good he is every 15 seconds of a live broadcast? - no, at least I don't.

You can't watch 5 minutes of professional golf without a discussion of how great Tiger is, even if he is not playing in the current tournament, or even if he is several shots back with the tournament decided in someone else's favor. The same was true of Jordan when he was playing. Everyone knew he was the best ever, but most intelligent fans don't need to be constantly reminded of this to realize it. You get sick of hearing it after so much.

Basically the Augusta memebers don't want to give away everything. They want to keep you wanting a little bit more. For example, this is the first year the Par 3 contest will be on TV and they are expecting really good ratings. Until this year no one without a ticket saw more than 5 minutes of this "competition". They know that folks like me who follow the Tour pretty closely will watch every minute.

this is probably the same things all of Palmers fans were saying when Nickalus showed up on tour.

You can't discount what Tiger does for a broadcast. He drives sponsership and ratings, do you really think CBS cares what else there is out there? Do you think all of the other Tour players are offended by what he did for the purses at each tournament?

I really doubt they give a **** if you don't feel like hearing about him when Rory is in the top ten in a tourney.

Its' simple, he attracts people when he is in contention, so why would they not use his name in every broadcast? All they want is for the casual fan to stop everytime they hear Nantz mention his name. Doesn't matter if he is in the tournament or not, those people get exposed to the sponsership.

you are a sharp guy, just think about it this way.

You know as well as me, they are above alot.

They are not any different than the NCAA or any pro league when holding a tournament or championship. They decide the times, the players, and the sponsership.

Whatever maximizes their dollar, just like ever governing body, they control as much as possible.

No different than the NFL, NBA, NCAA or MLB.

The only difference and problem people have with them is that they are a golf club.

Augusta National has always limited the broadcast times.

Because Augusta National and their members think they are above everything.
That's because they are above everything. Name another TV sporting event, where the network basically has zero control. CBS has a year to year handshake deal to broadcast the Masters, and all announcers must be approved by the Masters. Remember when that woman was raising hell with her "boycotts" at the Masters? The "Real Cigar Boys" didn't want advertisers to catch any flack, so they said screw commercials...we'll pay for the broadcast. I think CBS ran a one minute "First Tee" promo each hour.

They are above everything.

I love it! It's like every year they say "Welcome to our course, enjoy yourself and the experience. Please obey our rules." I forgot the kid's name, but he made it into the tournament as an amateur and was promptly asked to leave after hitting 2 balls into a green during a practice round! Imagine getting into the Master's and getting kicked out of the Master's before you ever play a shot. I can remember Gary McCord saying something like "that shot was uglier than Grandma's underwear" during the telecast, and he has never been back.

Course Superintendents from up North come down and volunteer to mow grass and rake bunkers. They control the marketing, concessions, course set-up, and pin placements. Not the PGA, but the Augusta National Tournament Committee! I almost wish more were tournaments were run this way.

behind the green at (I think) 13 for players who missed that green. That was about 1995, and they have never allowed him back. I love it, but he bugs me anyway.

They're not crazy.. they know where their bread is buttered.. Tiger Woods = $$$$$ and Tiger Woods = ratings.. the hardcore fans are going to watch regardless.. the casual fan could give a **** about Hunter Mahan and Andres Romero.

The only reason people watch Golf these days is to watch Tiger Woods kick ***. Sorry, the white man couldn't hold onto everything, maybe NASCAR, but that's about it.

Thats right - The also only have (3) major sponsors (IBM, Exxon and Mercedes Benz) It's not about the money, hell you can still go out there and get 2 beers and a sandwich for 5 bucks - It's about the exclusiveness of the whole event. I live here and have been every year since 78' and other than some modifications to the course not much has changed.
