This photo is getting a lot of press. Simone Biles and the other American gymnast bowed down during the medal ceremony to the Brazilian gymnast who won gold. Her rationale "it's about sportsmanship and we don't care whether we win or lose". Ok, I really don't understand that at all. But, anyway, this photo is getting a lot of press for women FINALLY getting their due recognition in sports. Praise that women can celebrate the accomplishments of other women, etc.

Hogwash. Women have been getting accolades for decades. Goodness, when I was a kid, Mary Lou Retton was a national icon, and that was 4 decades ago. She landed on a Wheaties box. And who can forget the female American gymnasts at the Atlanta Olympics. Then you've got Flo-Jo, Jackie Joyner Kersee. That's just a smattering from the Olympic realm. I just can't stand all this gaslighting that it's only just now that we are finally starting to appreciate women. Women have rightly been celebrated for their accomplishments in all walks of life for a very long time now.

Beyond all that, it just looks stupid.

Agree, and like you said, it just looks stupid

First I've seen of the photo...looks stupid to me too lol. Sportsmanship ≠ not caring if you win or lose

And I really don't understand the "don't care whether we win or lose" thing. Have never heard an athlete say that before.
I don't understand it either, it's the freakin' Olympics where you used to want to win the gold, period. But then I'm an old timer, I don't understand the need to have an XY whipping up on the XX or the need to have a drag queen Last Supper during the opening ceremony, I just never turned it back on. My opinion, my right, same as everybody else's, but why not just make the Olympics about the athletes from one country competing (legally) against the athletes from the other countries. Everything has to be politicized to satisfy the whacko groups.

I have literally never seen anything like it. Ever.

I guess I'd get it if they were all friends or something and just goofing around, but that's not her explanation. She said:

"I think it's all about sportsmanship, and we don't care whether we win or lose. We're always going to keep a good face and support our competitors because they've worked just as hard as we have for that moment. So you have to give them their flowers. And that's exactly what me and Jordan were doing, and we were so happy for her. She deserved it. She had the best floor routine of the day and in the Olympics. So it's like, yeah, she deserved it."

But why the bow? It's one thing to say "they were the best and they deserved it". Bowing is just...weird. It implies you are subjugating yourself to the other person. Michael Jordan, for his legendarily intense competitiveness, would acknowledge when someone else deserve the win, but I can't fathom him bowing down to another basketball player.

Simple, it's a ''look at us'' attention grabbing moment for non-winners.
Think about internet writers/bloggers. They'll do anything for clicks. It's a generational thing to sell your soul on the cheap.

Spot on.

All the bow really did was put the spotlight on Biles and the other American gymnast. Instead of talking about the winner. all the media are talking about is the bow.

The girl came back from three ACL surgeries to finally win gold. I think you are taking this a little too seriously. Heck of an accomplishment by the young woman. You can be against the woman empowerment movement and know when to back off.

They took away from her accomplishment by making it about them.
Nah, this is what I call looking for something to be mad about. You know how Conservatives talk about liberals having TDS. This is just the opposite of that. People just want to find something to criticize. Simone Biles won three gold medals and people were complaining then too because she took pictures with her husband with the medals around his neck. If you look for something to be ticked off about or look for things to show that society is somehow failing, you will find it. Context, gentlemen. You will see a picture without knowing all the facts and it will say one thing. When the facts are all put together, sometimes it will say I'm tripping.
