That’s because all the Utah fans were physically at the game and couldn’t watch on TV. 🤷‍♂️
OTOH, the attendance of 94,873 was the highest since the 2017 game when PSU/USC drew 95,128. No doubt the local organizers liked that even through the local USC fans wouldn't need to spend as much money as out of towners.

That's very difficult to believe about ESPN but Google agrees with you so shame on me.

I'm aware of the dates.

Either way that's the end me making rah rah posts for awhile.

While it may be true it’s been on ESPN for a dozen years, many people have dropped traditional cable TV in the past few years.

Most sports fans who drop cable end up getting ESPN via a streaming service instead (Sling, YouTubeTV, etc). I mean, if one didn’t have ESPN they wouldn’t have been able to watch the CFP bowls games either (along with other sports).

Am I in the minority that generally doesn’t watch a college game that doesn’t involve PSU? At least not more than a few minutes here and there.

I cannot tell you the last time I watched a full non-PSU game. I just don’t care enough about any other team, game or matchup to waste 3 hours on it. 10 years ago I would watch games at noon, 3, 7 and then the late West Coast game. Couldn’t get enough.

How do they track the millions of people that watch it and don't pay a cent for those streaming services?

I cut the cable almost a year ago. Still got to watch the ESPiN bowls on their website on my computer via their SkyCast. It is a bare bones sort of broadcast, but it works. All of us watching that wouldn't be included in TV rating numbers.

TV rating numbers are quickly becoming irrelevant.

Although we had our usual gathering of family at my house to watch the game, I remember thinking at kickoff it felt like a weird time for a Rose Bowl. May not be reality, just what it felt like to me.

If I wasn't a Penn State fan, I don't think I would have even realized the game was on that day. Part of it (for me) was that everyone went back to work the following day, and part was that it was played AFTER the NYE playoff games. Probably became an afterthought for many people.

Thinking about this further. Highest rated bowl besides playoffs. So they take a negative spin instead of a positive one. What a rag that site is!!!

You just described me as well....10 years ago I was a CFB junkie....now I only watch PSU.

I did watch the 2 semifinals this year, but didn't watch any of the CFP games last year.

Ratings for all the NY6 games were down (about 25%) vs last year.

The timing (with Sunday being NYD) definitely didn't help (especially for the Cotton and the Rose) but all the games took a hit.

Fewer and fewer people care (even the players :) ). Shouldn't be a surprise.

Wasn't on New Years Day, many more people had to work.

#3rd place B1G team Vs. Utah

That was easy.

I’ll never miss a PSU game but the idea of sitting down excited to watch USC and Oregon just isn’t there anymore. NIL, how Joe was disrespected, too many other competing priorities, too many games, annoying broadcasters, transfers being like free agency, dominance of the same 4 to 6 teams competing for titles, etc. - they all probably play a role in it for me anyway.

And do the rating typically slip when the rose bowl is on 1/2?
Thats a good question. Because I still think that it being played on a work day for many of us and the whole cable/not cable streaming thing is involved.
But I get annoyed that it was THE MOST WATCHED NON PLAYOFF BOWL GAME but they chose to go the other way.

I wonder at what point these mediafolk are gonna stop thinking that the general public cares how many people watch an event. I get why networks will say they have the most-watched this or that (Lord knows I like hearing lots of people watched my show) but does Joe Sixpack really care about these things?

I think a lot of folks had bowl game fatigue. If PSU wasn’t playing I probably would not have tuned in.

The PSU-Utah Rose Bowl is the college football game with the highest TV ratings of the year.
LOL. We see what you did there (seeing as how "this year" is only 6 days old) - and yes, the Rose Bowl outdrew all of the other college games broadcast so for "this year", the Cotton, Cheezit, and Reliaquest Bowls :)

I would have expected the 1918 Rose Bowl between Mare Island-USMC and Camp Lewis-US Army to have substantially fewer TV viewers.
