Your handle as well as the post itself suggest humility. We could always use more of that around here.I don’t follow basketball real close, just not much of a fan of the sport. Carolina is about the only basketball I watch. I say hat to preface that I am not a basketball expert, but I believe we are a program who can take a close look at a young up and comer. If it turns out good, then you may have a quality coach for years. If it doesn’t, it isn’t like anyone outside of us even pay much attention to our men’s program, nor will the program dropped off of a cliff.
Meh. He wouldn't even be on our radar if he wasn't at Furman.
Totally agree. Despite what some believe, we are not a basketball power with great past history, and never have been outside of a few years that most gamecock fans can even remember.I don’t follow basketball real close, just not much of a fan of the sport. Which reveals a truism regarding that station. If you rearrange the letters WSPA you get PAWS.

I'd like to join in the debate on this point.
The same could have been said of Greg Marshall back in 2001 when Dave Odom was selected by then AD Mike McGee. Marshall had only been at Winthrop for three years, but took them to the Big Dance all three. At the time, I personally wanted Rick Pitino as Eddie Fogler's replacement. Funny enough, Pitino himself was quoted saying ' ... they don't need me, they have Greg Marshall down there ...'
We all know the history now ... McGee pulled the trigger on Odom, and Eric Hyman kept loading up his hurtlocker with "Warchest of Credibility" cannon balls. The subsequent move to Darrin Horn almost killed the program. Then Hyman pulled out his search for a "National Coach" and lured Frank Martin away from Kansas State.
I don't know who would be best for the job this time around, but comparing where Marshall was when the job was first open after a veteran coach, I think Richey deserves a good long, honest look. (And, I'll admit, I know very LITTLE about Richey.)
Maybe Rick Pitino will give us serious consideration this time around?
That means that Winthrop won their conference three times.I'd like to join in the debate on this point.

I think Pitino is now almost 70. I think his next move will be to the front porch and his rocking chair.I'd like to join in the debate on this point.

I can't see Richey. Just not accomplished enough.Ummm, not a good comparison at all. Marshall went to Winthrop and took them the NCAAT in each of his first 3 seasons prior to our job opening up. In 6 seasons at Furman, Richey has not yet won the conference and earned an NCAAT trip.
What more does the man have to do? he is currently 10th of active coaches in winning percentages...he was only a few seconds away from the NCAA tournament...watch us let him slip away and become a big time coach somewhere else...that's what our athletic dept does...I can't see Richey. Just not accomplished enough.
Good chance that would have been different had cooler heads prevailed in 1971.....Totally agree. Despite what some believe, we are not a basketball power with great past history, and never have been outside of a few years that most gamecock fans can even remember.
That's the Iona coach's son.I think Pitino is now almost 70. I think his next move will be to the front porch and his rocking chair.
Or, he could be another Horn. Who knows? What more does the man have to do? he is currently 10th of active coaches in winning percentages...he was only a few seconds away from the NCAA tournament...watch us let him slip away and become a big time coach somewhere else...that's what our athletic dept does...
I think the reference in post #13, which I was quoting, is to the Iona coach's son's father. That's the Iona coach's son.
If we name him, I'm holding you personally responsible for assuring his success. What more does the man have to do? he is currently 10th of active coaches in winning percentages...he was only a few seconds away from the NCAA tournament...watch us let him slip away and become a big time coach somewhere else...that's what our athletic dept does...

Looks like you might be off the hook.So now I am your fiduciary, Mr. Sesquipedalian!!!! Oh, oh, Mr. King Ward
Apparently. We'll confirm maybe tomorrow. You mean I've been absolved?
So glad you're the head honcho...Mr. Full-charge!!!Apparently. We'll confirm maybe tomorrow.
OK...I just feel you being so truculent...I'll lighten up a little....That isn't necessary.
Please stop being reasonableHe could win his conference. Just once. Four other teams have done it since he’s been there. He’s done a very nice job, but he’s still green. He’s got to learn to beat the teams that know him best. If he can’t beat out SoCon coaches, how’s he going to beat SEC coaches. Win the conference, then we can talk.
