early season couch burning practice game vs. Dukezney. The Pitt date is unusually early. Thought that was some kind of rivalry for the 14 fans of each school?home to Duquesne and then home to Pitt.
A good friend of mine, and Pitt grad, did some calculations based upon size of student body and number of living alumni. Given the large disparity in both between Penn State and Pitt, the attendance for Pitt is about what one would expect. He is also quick to point out the "14 fans", as you say, who show up for Penn State basketball games. To me its no big deal either way. People can spend their hard earned dollars any way they choose.early season couch burning practice game vs. Dukezney. The Pitt date is unusually early. Yet we should play a home and home with Pitt and WVU? Really?A good friend of mine, and Pitt grad, did some calculations based upon size of student body and number of living alumni. Pitt sells out every home game. They just happen to have 50k fans that come dressed as a yellow seat!A good friend of mine, and Pitt grad, did some calculations based upon size of student body and number of living alumni. I certainly would not suggest that. I have no desire to play either school. I'd much rather play a Texas, or Tennessee, or Clemson.Yet we should play a home and home with Pitt and WVU? Really?
We have a similar dynamic down here in Carolina @fairgambitI certainly would not suggest that. I have no desire to play either school. I'd much rather play a Texas, or Tennessee, or Clemson.
Great news for us. The Neers will be looking past PSU and concentrating all their attention on their massive tiff with the Dukes.home to Duquesne and then home to Pitt.

In their last meeting Duquesne won 19-0 at Morgantown. Of course, that was in 1935, but the bitter memories of that cold November day still haunt the Mountaineer faithful.Great news for us. Actually, WVU has a pretty rabid fanbase.early season couch burning practice game vs. Dukezney. The Pitt date is unusually early. Thought that was some kind of rivalry for the 14 fans of each school?
I think they spent $49.00 in State College the last time they came into town.Actually, WVU has a pretty rabid fanbase.
Before the series ended in 1992 I attended 27 straight Penn State/WVU games, home and away. I can attest to their passion. While I have no desire to resume the series, I always enjoyed my trips to Morgantown and I never had a problem with their fans, home or away. I saw no evidence of their frugality. When I saw them in town they were spending freely.I think they spent $49.00 in State College the last time they came into town.
Rabid? holy shiat, maybe they are in Morgantown when they are smashing up stuff but they were scared to travel into State College and spend.
Can’t we all just agree that they were a FUN bunch. Frankly if someone is offended by a toothless, drunken, horde of frenzied fanatics. Either in SC or Morgantown then you probably shouldn’t attend college football games. Before the series ended in 1992 I attended 27 straight Penn State/WVU games, home and away. I might add that in 27 years I only saw 2 losses so that may have colored my view of the "rivalry".
In 40 years of Penn State Season tickets, including over 100 road games, I find most fan bases are pretty much the same. Like us, they are mostly good people, passionate about their school, with some real a*holes mixed in. In many ways over 4 decades, I enjoyed the road trips more than the home games. Only once did I feel threatened, by some drunken Syracuse fans, and I've seen worse by some of our own in Beaver Stadium. Football Saturdays are a diversion from the realities of life, and I think most fans, regardless of school, realize that. At any game, if you want trouble you will likely find it. If you want a good game experience, home or away, it is there for the taking. Can’t we all just agree that they were a FUN bunch. See we agree on everything. You just phrased it differently. In 40 years of Penn State Season tickets, including over 100 road games, I find most fan bases are pretty much the same. Well, I'm not on board with the "toothless, drunken" part, but other than that, yes, we agree. I will tell you that I saw some very fine looking women in Morgantown through the years and none were lacking teeth. Also, by my observation, their percentage of drunken fans is about the same as ours.See we agree on everything. You just phrased it differently.
And in 1941 they finished 8th in the final AP Poll. Ohio State was 13th. Alabama was 20th.BTW, Duquesne once beat an SEC team in the Orange Bowl (1937)
My ex-wife is a Chatham grad (and UPenn veterinarian). Never thought I'd see the day when Chatham would find its way into a PSU football discourse. We have a similar dynamic down here in Carolina @fairgambit
UNC has to play ECU and App and no one can explain how either game helps UNC. It's the lesser programs' super bowl of course. In PSU's case, the economics are unbelievably tilted one way. WVU doesn't spend any money in State College. Why play them? Pitt makes us buy additional tickets to see PSU at Pitt. None of it makes sense for PSU. Let Pitt play WVU and Duquesne and throw in Chatham College (do they have a team?).
I think they run the Wing-T to perfection. Pitt is scared of them.My ex-wife is a Chatham grad (and UPenn veterinarian). Never thought I'd see the day when Chatham would find its way into a PSU football discourse.
Makes sense to me. They are going to get beat up in their first game and then then play two city stiffs to recover. Smart scheduling.home to Duquesne and then home to Pitt.
I have friends in Morgantown and the consensus there, and nationally, is that West Virgina will struggle to win 6 games in 2023. Pitt will not be one of them.Makes sense to me. They are going to get beat up in their first game and then then play two city stiffs to recover. Smart scheduling.
Don't underestimate Narduzzi. He is capable of losing to anyone. He could easily tank against a bad WVU team.I have friends in Morgantown and the consensus there, and nationally, is that West Virgina will struggle to win 6 games in 2023. Pitt will not be one of them.

Yes, he can lose to anyone. But he can also beat anyone as he proved in 2016 when he gave National Champion Clemson its only loss and also beat us (#7 in final AP poll).Don't underestimate Narduzzi. He is capable of losing to anyone. He could easily tank against a bad WVU team.
Disagree with a similar amount of PSU games - home and away. PSU fans have a reputation of among the nicest in all of sports. In 40 years of Penn State Season tickets, including over 100 road games, I find most fan bases are pretty much the same. Then we shall disagree... agreeably.Disagree with a similar amount of PSU games - home and away. PSU fans have a reputation of among the nicest in all of sports.
Did you point out Fair that Pitt is in the middle of a metropolitan area of 2.2 million residents that is known for its love and passion for football? Compared to State College's metro population....A good friend of mine, and Pitt grad, did some calculations based upon size of student body and number of living alumni. I can’t believe that I missed this, and I’m calling BS. You damn well know where you want people to spend their hard earned money. Exclusively on your cheap, poorly made, worthless, overpriced, non returnable and often unsafe dangerous products. Have a rainbow day.People can spend their hard earned dollars any way they choose.
His counter would likely be that most fans at Penn State games come from outside the State College area. I would then say that shows our alums are more passionate because they are willing to travel a distance to attend games. He might then say that Penn State has 450,000 more living alums than Pitt and more than double the students so percentage wise the crowds are similar. His final argument would be Pitt fans are less enamored of football and more so of opera, ballet, and the symphony. That would be the clincher.Did you point out Fair that Pitt is in the middle of a metropolitan area of 2.2 million residents that is known for its love and passion for football?
