Yet another reason to not like that other school - if you need one

I am a long time reader and first time poster. I was prompted to post because I didn't want this small school to be forced to change something they have used for over 60 years by a bunch of lawyers for "that other school" looking for something to do. I don't know if "they" have done this before or are just trying to set a precedent. If I were the school principal, I would fight this tooth and nail. However, I work in this small town and know they don't have the money to be throwing around on such petty things as changing mascots or hiring lawyers to fight it. I know for a fact there are schools in Mississippi currently using the exact same logo as "that other school". I don't know if they have received the same letter or not. At least McKenzie's mascot is slightly different. "They" may be right according to the word of law, but this should not transpire without at least getting a HEAVY dose of bad PR. This is truly pathetic!

It is within their rights, but why here? Why now? This school was not selling bootleg UM items. There's not much of a market for that up here. Their logo has some differences and has been in use for a looong time. What's the harm? It looks like someone just wants to bill some hours.

they are certainly within their rights to do so. and i would bet that no one from the school knew about this - it all went through their "licensing company". i guess it's a good thing we don't have one of those...

i completely agree with this enforcement of their property rights. the same thing happened to the high school i graduated from - the woodlands, tx. we used wisconsin's W for about 5 years before they sent a similar letter. the logo was all over the school facilities and uni's, but they had to change it all over time.

the concern is dilution. if anyone could use your logo, it would lose its value. had this field of law been around years ago, princeton would probably be the only team sported winged helmets (sorry, michigan), and only one of georgia/grambling/green bay would be sporting the "G" as they do.

I wonder if we should let them know that we held a similar "contest" for mascot development, which resulted in some sterling results. Perhaps they would like to use one of those. Hopefully to God we haven't copyrighted those abominations.

It's my belief they no longer have a cheerleader or whatever dressed as Colonel Reb at athletic contests. Does OM still use the figure/concept/image elsewhere? Like on sweatshirs or stationery? If they are, I see the point in defending the copyright. If they aren't using it, they need to get a life and let it go.

high school where I live in TX. They are having to take off all of the spartan logos on their school , uniforms etc... or MSU will sue them...

what we really need is a coach to go off the deep end to the national media. that'll fix the board up nice for a few more days.

As was said, i'm sure the Collegiate Licensing company is behind it.

That's true. You let one company or organization slip one time and you have just diluted your copywrite. Then future defendands have a defense against any future litigation. That's why you see large organizations aggressively defend it.
