You're right. You don't have any backwoods Mississippi fans that choose to cheer for MSU because they're the "farming school". They all have degrees. Every last one of them.

I'll put it this way, I have a family friend who thinks of himself as a redneck. He's going to State this fall partially because he feels like he'll fit in better there. Just saying that the stereotype does carry some weight with people, rooted mainly in the fact that you're the ag school in the state. And when you're talking about walk on fans, that's my uneducated guess as to what attracts a portion of the redneck element to MSU, just as the Confederate symbolism attracts a redneck element in our walk on fanbase.

I think that also depends on what town you're from. I can't explain it, but for whatever reason there are definitely State towns and Ole Miss towns in Mississippi, where you've probably got at least 75% of the walk on fans in the town for one or the other depending on the town. You see that a lot in recruiting, with prospects from certain Ole Miss towns typically going to Ole Miss and prospects from MSU towns typically going to MSU.

State doesn't really have THAT many walk-on fans to start with, at least that go to games. I would venture to say that most of our walk-on fans that come to the games went to USM, so even they are college educated.

To be fair, most of the walk-on fans that you are talking about are "country" people whereas most of your walk-on fans are "white trash". There IS a difference.
