Bill Self reacts to crazy school record set by Jalen Wilson
Jalen Wilson set a crazy school record at Kansas and head coach Bill Self was nearly at a loss for words.
Wilson set the record for most points scored in a five-game stretch for the Jayhawks with 133. It came in a win for Kansas over in-state rival Kansas State.
Self broke it down after the No. 8 Jayhawks’ 90-78 win over the No. 7 Wildcats.
“133 is a pretty good number for a five game stretch,” Self said postgame. “Unfortunately we go 2-3 in that five game (stretch) and he’s usually scored the most points when we’ve labored the most offensively, which is sign of a good player. (Thought we) would really spread the wealth a little bit and, but still he was the main guy and got us off to a good start.”
Wilson finished the win with 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Kansas built a 49-37 lead at halftime and cruised to a win after the team’s initial loss to Kansas State in mid-January.
In 22 games this season, Wilson averaged 21.3 points per game, 8.5 rebounds per game, 2.5 assists per game, shot 42.7% from the floor and 35.4% from three-point range.

“I thought we played pretty well,” Self said. “ I don’t think we guarded them very well in the second half because we fouled them every possession. And that’s not the way that I don’t think Jerome (Tang) or myself would want the second half to go. Because I think both teams were in the bones with like 12 Left or 13 left and so you got to be defensive. That’s usually when you foul the most but I actually thought I thought we did some good things early.
“Shot it well early and had some rhythm and … probably didn’t execute as well the second half. We did some good things. Their guys are tough to guard … They’ve got a good team and I actually thought we did a good job for the most part. Our bench was terrific. Best our bench has been all year.”
In addition to Wilson’s school record, Self and the Jayhawks got a much needed victory. But it does not get any easier in the Big 12 for Kansas.
The Jayhawks return to the floor Saturday on the road against No. 13 Iowa State at 12:00 p.m. ET.
