Personal Life
Darryn Peterson emerged as one of the most heralded recruits in the 2025 recruiting class after scoring more than 1,000 points during his first two seasons of high school basketball and starring on the club circuit. He started his high school career at Canton (Ohio) Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, where he earned Division II All-Ohio and All-Northeast Inland honors during his freshman and sophomore season. During the 2022-2023 season, Peterson averaged 31 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.8 steals and 1.3 assists and was a finalist for the Ohio Mr. Basketball Award. Ahead of his junior season, Peterson transferred to Huntington Prep in West Virginia. NIL played a large role in his decision to transfer, according to CVCA coach Matt Futch. "We don't have NIL deals in Ohio," Futch said. "That was a lot in the reasoning and decision making that they had to go into making this decision. You gotta put yourself in position as a young person to take advantage of that. That can be life changing. That played a major role in this decision because Ohio does not have NIL." Peterson has starred on the international stage, too. He averaged 16.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists for the United States' U16 national team in the FIBA Americas championship. Peterson's father, Darryl, played at Akron from 2001-2006.
