Personal Life
Michael Mayer didn’t plan on playing high school football. The summer before his freshman year at Park Hills (Ky.) Covington Catholic, Mayer had decided to focus on basketball in hopes of playing in the sport college while also playing baseball. But the school’s freshman coach, at the request of Meyer’s father Andy, gave Meyer a call and convinced him to play as a freshman to see if he liked it. Meyer never looked back. He played three seasons on the varsity team and Covington Catholic went 44-1 with two state championships during that span. As a senior, he won the 2019 Gatorade Kentucky Football Player of the Year after snagging 49 catches for 970 yards and 15 touchdowns and notching 102.5 tackles with four interceptions. Mayer earned All-ACC third team as a freshman during the 2020 COVID season at Notre Dame. He is the younger brother of AJ Mayer. AJ Mayer is a quarterback for Miami (Ohio), joining the Redhawks program in 2018.
