A pair of seemingly unbreakable records in California high school basketball fell on the same night — in the same game.

Nick and Dylan Khatchikian of Mesrobian High outside of L.A. broke the state’s single-game scoring and assist records in a 119-25 win over Pasadena’s Waverly High Thursday night. Nick, who averages better than 32 points per game, scored 102 of his team’s 119 in the contest, shooting 48 for 60 from the field with only six 3-point attempts and four free throws.

That becomes the new CIF state single-game record previous set by Tigran Grigoryan — who also played at Mesrobian — during the 2003-04 season. He is currently an assistant with the program.

Dylan, meanwhile, broke the record of Calvary Baptist‘s Josh Arruejo, who had 31 assists in a single game in 2019. According to the NFHS record book, his 35 assists tie the national record set by Andre Colbert of DeSales (N.Y.) in 1987.

What’s even more shocking about the scoring mark for Khatchikian is that he did it in only 22 minutes of game action. Mesrobian coach Mike Gabriel subbed him out of the game 2:17 left in the third quarter after breaking the record with his 102nd point.

Former Chino Hills star and current Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball scored 92 points in a game in 2017, but never cracked triple-digits.

Coming into Thursday’s game, Khatchikian had scored 30-plus points on five occasions this season and once hit over 40. But his scoring output — and the number of attempts — never approached what he did in his record-breaking performance.
