Report: Connor Stalions named acting HC at Detroit Mumford after head coach suffers 'mild stroke'
Connor Stalions has been named acting head coach of Detroit Mumford High School for at least one week, as he’ll lead the team on Friday evening as the program’s head coach deals with a health issue, per Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports.
You may remember Stalions for a little issue called the Michigan sign-stealing scandal that overtook the college football world last season. After leaving the Wolverines in a whirlwind turn of events and becoming a documentary star on Netflix, Stalions was named the defensive coordinator at Detriot Mumford High School in a volunteer role earlier in August.
Now, he’s the man who will step up for the program against Hamady High School in Livonia, Michigan, after head coach William McMichael suffered “a mild stroke.”
“Connor Stalions got his wish of becoming a head coach, but perhaps not like this. Michigan’s infamous former staffer has become acting coach for Detroit Mumford High School at least for (Friday’s) game against Hamady High School in Livonia, Michigan,” Dodd reported. “Stalions had been a volunteer defensive coordinator for the Mustangs but took over last week when head coach William McMichael suffered what he called ‘a mild stroke.’
“McMichael said he entered the hospital last Friday, Aug. 30, a day after a season-opening loss to Thurston, and stayed for three days. ‘Connor is leading the team now,’ McMichael texted CBS Sports. McMichael told CBS Sports his return to work is ‘unknown.’ Stalions had been volunteer DC for the Mustangs since around Memorial Day.”
Moreover, McMichael was part of the reason how Stalions landed the gig at Mumford, according to The Detroit News, which originally reported Stalions’ move to the high school ranks, as they revealed the former Michigan staffer had a prior relationship the Mumford head coach before taking the job.

McMichael is the father of former Michigan enrollee Jeremiah Beasley — who has since transferred to Missouri after the departure of Jim Harbaugh — and got to know Stalions when the Wolverines were recruiting his son.
“He’s great with the kids, has an outstanding football mind and we’re learning a lot — not just the kids, but the coaching staff,” McMichael said to The News. “He’s a great addition to what we’re doing. He can help prepare the kids for college.
“They are learning the lingo, how they practice college and how they break down film, so it gives the kids an advantage.”
Now, it’ll be Conor Stalions turn to lead Mumford into battle, even if the circumstances may not be the way he would’ve liked to receive the opportunity.
