The best teams have stayed on top after five weeks of action in the 2024 Hawaii high school football season. As reflected by the Hawaii On3 Massey Ratings as of Sept. 18, the nationally ranked teams have distanced themselves from the rest of the pack.

Meanwhile, only three teams in the top ten remain undefeated, highlighting a competitive football landscape in ‘The Aloha State.’ Likewise, none of the teams ranked from 11 to 25 are unblemished. Here’s the latest standing regarding Hawaii’s best football teams.

The On3 Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory. According to the model — two teams from Hawaii rank inside the nationwide top 100.

1. Mililani

Previous: No. 1
The Trojans have survived close games and dominated opponents to establish their 4-0 record to start the season. Mililani edged Los Alamitos, California’s 11th-best team, in their latest outing 27-24. Lehiwa and Nakoa Kahana-Travis combined for three rushing touchdowns, while Jonah Togafu-Tavui added a receiving TD. Meanwhile, the Trojans defense picked off the Griffins five times to preserve the three-point victory. The Trojans will aim for 5-0 in their Sept. 22 contest against Waipahu, Hawaii’s eighth-best team.

2. Kahuku

Previous: No. 2
The Red Raiders retained the second spot in the Hawaii high school football rankings after losing to California-based Mater Dei, the nation’s best team. In that game, Malosi Fiatoa scored Kahuku’s lone touchdown after the Monarchs had scored 31 unanswered points in the first three quarters. However, Kahuku has been dominant within Hawaii, scoring victories against St. Louis, Konawaena, and Waimea. The Red Raiders return to action against ninth-ranked Farrington on the 22nd.

3. James Campbell

Previous: No. 3
The Sabers scored their third one-sided victory to start the season. In their 50-7 demolition of Farrington, Jaron Keawe-Sagapolutele threw for 403 yards and five touchdowns. Zayden Alviar-Costa tallied 142 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Tyson Ball had 122 yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, their defense finished with three interceptions and two sacks. James Campbell will aim for a 4-0 record when they face seventh-ranked Kapolei on the 21st.

4. St. Louis

Previous: No. 4
The Crusaders are coming off a 49-10 loss to Damien Memorial School, a stark contrast from their 37-7 victory against Kamehameha. Despite the inconsistency, St. Louis ranks fourth among Hawaii high school football teams due to their rigid strength of schedule. However, as much as they want another victory, it won’t be easy because sixth-ranked Punahou awaits them.

5. Kamehameha

Previous: No. 5
After their 37-7 loss to St. Louis on Sept. 7, the Warriors are back on track via a 21-17 victory over Punahou a week later. Jevin Bolos-Reyes and Nainoa Melchor scored rushing touchdowns, while Nui Kaapana had a 95-yard kickoff return touchdown. Kamehameha will be able to level the count with St. Louis as the two teams face each other on Oct. 5.

6. Punahou

Previous: No. 6
While they lost in their recent match against Kamehameha, some players still performed magnificently. Zion White had 163 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Nelson Aau had 77 rushing yards and a touchdown for the Buff ‘n Blue. Punahou can bounce back by defeating St. Louis on Sept. 21.

7. Kapolei

Previous: No. 7
The Hurricanes are the third undefeated team in the Hawaii high school football top ten after Mililani and James Campbell. Kapolei improved to 3-0 via a 35-16 victory over Kapaa last Aug. 31. Liatama Amisone was all over the field, tallying 243 passing yards, 182 rushing yards, and five touchdowns. Meanwhile, Tristan Inay and Zayne Pasion combined for 124 rushing yards and a touchdown. However, a tough test awaits Kapolei as they face James Campbell in three days.

8. Waipahu

Previous: No. 8
Waipahu’s last game was a disaster, losing to Kamehameha 44-6. David Vidinha found Tim Figueroa in the end zone for the Marauders’ lone touchdown. It was an off night for Waipahu, leading to this humiliating loss, wherein they had 218 yards on offense. However, their road doesn’t get easier because top-ranked Mililani will be their opponents on the 22nd.

9. Farrington

Previous: No. 9
Their strong start to the season is over after they lost their last two games, including their 50-7 setback against James Campbell. The offense failed to score a touchdown, but Lauititi Liufau completed a 51-yard interception return for Farrington’s only points. Defeating second-ranked Kahuku on Sept. 22 should be a massive confidence booster for the Governors.

10. Konawaena

Previous: No. 10
Either the Wildcats shut down their opponents or have been contained to score points. Konawaena has won two consecutive games after beating Hilo last Sept. 8. Keenan Alani torched the Vikings with 334 passing yards and five touchdowns, three of which went to wide receiver Aliimalu Tan. Konowaena can improve their winning streak to three games when they face Keeau on Sept. 21.
