The Hawaii On3 Massey Ratings top 25 list as of Sept. 23 features minimal changes, as four teams, including two in the top ten, switched places. Likewise, it’s worth noting that only two of the 25 best teams in Hawaii high school football remain undefeated, signaling a highly competitive landscape. Here’s the latest standing regarding Hawaii’s top football teams.

The On3 Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory. According to the model, two teams from Hawaii rank in the top 100 nationwide.

1. Mililani

Previous: No. 1
The Trojans remain as Hawaii’s top team after maintaining their undefeated record. They handily defeated Waipahu in a game that was practically over by halftime. Quarterback Treston McMillan and the Mililani offense maintained a 35-7 lead after two quarters. The advantage proved insurmountable for the Marauders, handing the Trojans their fifth win in as many games. However, their unblemished loss column will be tested as they compete with second-ranked Kahuku on the 29th.

2. Kahuku

Previous: No. 2
After a disappointing loss to Mater Dei, America’s top-ranked high school football team, the Red Raiders vented their frustration by completing a 21-0 shutout of Farrington. It’s their second shutout victory this season; the first was against Konawaena. Meanwhile, Kahuku’s top-ranked defense among Hawaii high school football teams has limited opponents to 15.16 points per game. However, the Kahuku team will have their hands full next week when they face top-ranked Mililani on Sept. 29.

3. James Campbell

Previous: No. 3
The Sabers are the second undefeated team among the top 25, following Mililani. They’ve maintained a 4-0 record after defeating Kapolei, which also keeps them barely outside of the top 100 teams nationwide (108th, to be exact). Campbell quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele threw for 203 yards and four touchdowns, while Rusten Abang-Perez had 103 receiving yards and two scores. The Sabers will get a one-week break before facing top-ranked Mililani on Oct. 5.

4. St. Louis

Previous: No. 4
After losing their first two games to Kahuku and Mililani, the Crusaders extended their winning streak to four games with a 31-21 victory over Punahou. Nainoa Lopes navigated St. Louis’s offense, finishing with two rushing touchdowns. Their fourth-ranked offense and third-ranked defense will face a formidable challenge in sixth-ranked Kamehameha on Oct. 6.

5. Punahou

Previous: No. 6 (+1)
The Buff n’ Blue dropped four of their last five games, including the latest matchup with St. Louis. However, that defeat is still filled with positives, as Hunter Fujikawa finished with 234 passing yards and three touchdowns. Meanwhile, Zion White and Donte Utu combined for 182 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Punahou will try to return to the win column by defeating Damien Memorial School on Sept. 29.

6. Kamehameha

Previous: No. 5 (-1)
The Warriors’ last game resulted in a 21-17 victory over Punahou, which improved their record to 4-2. Kamehameha had 235 total yards on offense, an impressive total considering they have the fourth most challenging strength of schedule. Next on their schedule are the St. Louis Crusaders on Oct. 6.

7. Kapolei

Previous: No. 7
The Hurricanes maintained their top-ten status despite their 40-23 loss to James Campbell. In that loss, Liamata Amisone fought bravely, tallying 166 passing yards, 77 rushing yards, and two touchdowns. Kapolei can bounce back by defeating ninth-ranked Waipahu on Sept. 28.

8. Farrington

Previous: No. 8
The Governors couldn’t catch a break against the best teams in Hawaii high school football. They are now on a three-game losing streak after competing against St. Louis, James Campbell, and Kahuku. Worst yet, they failed to score a single point against the Red Raiders and have tallied 14 points in those losses. Farrington can bounce back by defeating Kapolei on Oct. 5 and pulling off an upset win over Mililani on Oct. 12.

9. Waipahu

Previous: No. 9
After winning their first two games, the Marauders are on a two-game losing streak. They averaged 24.5 points per game in their wins and only 11.5 in their losses. Their defense hasn’t improved either, giving up 86 points to Kamehameha and Mililani. Unfortunately, Waipahu’s schedule doesn’t get easier because Kapolei, Kahuku, and James Campbell are their next three assignments.

10. Konawaena

Previous: No. 10
In addition to their three-game winning streak, the Wildcats have limited their opponents to six points in those victories. In their latest win against Keaau, Keenan Alani threw for 276 yards and six touchdowns, while Austin Takaki had three receiving touchdowns for 169 yards. Hercules Nahale provided muscle to Konawaena’s rushing attack, finishing with 150 yards and a touchdown. The Wildcats can extend their winning streak against Hilo on Sept. 28.
