Led by a 25-point performance from Syracuse signee Kiyan Anthony, Long Island Lutheran (N.Y.) downed Virginia’s Oak Hill Academy 71-61 on Wednesday in the play-in round of the Nike EYBL Scholastic Conference Tournament.

Anthony, the son of former NBA star Carmelo Anthony, hit 9 of his 15 attempts from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers. And he finished 5/7 from the free throw line to lead the way for Lutheran. Brothers Kayden Mingo (15 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists) and Dylan Mingo (20 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists) were the other two Crusaders in double-figures. The trio combined to score 60 of LuHi’s 71 points.

Oak Hill actually jumped out to a 16-13 lead after one quarter and led 33-25 at the halftime break as the trio of Mingo, Mingo and Anthony struggled to get going. The Crusaders hit just 10 of their first 27 attempts from the field and connected on 1 of 7 3-pointers in the first half.

They came out hot after the break though, closing the gap to 50-47 after three quarters after Oak Hill stretched its lead to 14 early in the third. LuHi dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring the Warriors 24-11 in the final frame and hitting 8 of their 13 attempts from the field. As Oak Hill tried to close the gap in the final minutes, the Crusaders made 7/10 from the free throw line to lock down the victory.

LuHi forced 17 Oak Hill turnovers that led to 19 points, and they dominated the paint by outscoring the Warriors 40-12 inside. Oak Hill was led by 20 points from junior forward Ethan Mgbako, 16 from sophomore wing Howard Williams and 12 from Iona-bound senior Deondrea Lindsey.

Lutheran now faces No. 2 seed Brewster Academy (N.H.) in the tournament’s quarterfinal round.
