Michigan high school football coach steps down after six games

After just six games leading the Dearborn Pioneers (MI) football program, Matt Giarmo, who was hired by the school back in March, is stepping down.
According to Hometown Life’s Brandon Folsom, Dearborn Public Schools communication director David Mustonen confirmed that Giarmo will no longer be leading Dearborn’s football program, but will remain at the school in his current teaching capacity.
The Pioneers are currently 3-3 on the season and are scheduled to face Wayne Memorial (1-5) tomorrow night.
Folsom released the email letter that Dearborn principal Zeina Jebril sent out to parents regarding the coaching change occurring from Giarmo to interim head coach Nick Margo, who is also the junior varsity lead man.

“By now, many of you are aware of the change in the Head Football Coaching position here at Dearborn High. I understand that rumors have circulated, and I want to take this opportunity to share accurate information.
Earlier today, Matt Giarmo stepped down from his position as Dearborn High’s Varsity Football Coach. We want to thank Mr. Giarmo for the time he spent leading the Pioneer team. Mr.
Giarmo will continue his teaching responsibilities here at DHS.
In consultation with Athletic Director Mr. David Holly, I’m pleased to announce that Mr. Nick Margo will take over as Interim Head Coach of the Pioneer Varsity Football team. Mr. Margo is no stranger to Dearborn High as he has been the Head Coach of the JV Football team.
He knows our community and has many connections with our students as he is a teacher at Bryant Middle School. I know that Coach Margo and the entire coaching staff at Dearborn High are dedicated to not only building a winning team but also building a program that demonstrates the character, attitudes, and beliefs of our school.
Here at Dearborn High, and throughout the entire District, we embrace an approach to student discipline that is restorative and dignified-one that prioritizes repairing harm, building relationships, and fostering accountability. However, when student conduct warrants more severe consequences, we will follow our due process, and appropriate actions will be taken.
In any athletic competition, winning is often the most visible measure of success. A far greater measure of the value of sports is personal growth, developing skills to work as a team, and a deeper sense of accomplishment for all involved.
I look forward to the continued success of all our athletic teams and the success of our Pioneer football team in the remaining weeks ahead. This is the time when we must do what we always do here at Dearborn High: work together to support each other and remain focused on our students”
The Pioneers are in the midst of a three-game losing streak after starting the season off 3-0. Before Giarmo’s arrival, Dearborn finished with a 8-3 record a year ago, qualifying for a berth in the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Division I playoffs.
