National HSFB Top 25

With the 2024 season finally underway across the entire nation, the national high school football rankings are beginning to take shape near the top.

Mater Dei (Calif.) bested Bishop Gorman (Nev.) in a top-10 battle last week and remains at No. 1 moving into the middle of September. North Crowley (Texas) makes a move into the top 10 after upsetting DeSoto (Texas), while six teams enter the ranking toward the bottom after picking up big wins.

Below are the updated top 25 programs in the nation heading into the second weekend of September, according to the On3 Massey Ratings.

The On3 Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule and margin of victory. According to the model — four teams from Alabama rank inside the nationwide top 100.

1. Mater Dei (Calif.)

Previous Ranking: No. 1
The Monarchs (2-0) proved to be too much for Bishop Gorman last week, besting the Gaels 31-15 behind standout games from Washington QB commit Dash Beierly and Oregon RB commit Jordon Davison. Stamping itself as the top team in the nation with authority, Mater Dei now gets on the road for the first time in 2024 and will head to Hawaii to take on Kahuku (3-1), the No. 2 team in the state, on Saturday night.

2. Duncanville (Texas)

Previous Ranking: No. 2
Duncanville finally began its season last weekend and lived up to the hype, stomping South Oak Cliff 34-12 on the road. To no surprise, Alabama QB commit Keelon Russell and Oregon WR commit Dakorien Moore delivered. Russell threw for five touchdowns and over 300 yards while Moore racked up nine catches and a score. This week, the Panthers (1-0) will welcome in Baltimore St. Frances Academy (Md.), the No. 1 team in Maryland and No. 32 team in the nation, for a Saturday-night clash in the Lone Star State.

3. St. John Bosco (Calif.)

Previous Ranking: No. 3 (+1)
The Braves faced some adversity on the road once again last weekend but came out on top in a 38-28 victory at Sierra Canyon. Junior athlete Madden Williams caught three TDs and had over 250 yards in the victory. Now 3-0, Bosco stays away from home once again and will head to San Mateo to take on Junipero Serra, the No. 11 team in California, on Saturday night.

4. Southlake Carroll (Texas)

Previous Ranking: No. 5 (+1)
Southlake Carroll showcased a dominate run game in its 59-16 victory on the road over Hebron last week, as USC RB commit Riley Wormley and Baylor RB commit Davis Penn combined for five touchdowns. The Dragons (2-0) are bringing one of the nation’s best offenses to the table every week and will look to keep the early momentum going when they host Byron Nelson, the No. 33 team in the nation, on Friday.

5. North Shore (Texas)

Previous Ranking: No. 6 (+1)
Despite a shaky night offensively, North Shore relied on its stout defense to defeat Crowley on the road, 28-13. Led by Ohio State CB commit Devin Sanchez, the Mustangs (2-0) have look as advertised on that side of the ball thus far, allowing just 13 points through its first two games. North Shore returns home and takes on Houston Westfield this Friday.

6. Bishop Gorman (Nev.)

Previous Ranking: No. 7 (+1)
Bishop Gorman remains winless all-time against Mater Dei, but the Gaels (2-1) still managed to move up a spot in the Massey Ratings. Two impressive wins remain under the Nevada powerhouse’s belt already and a chance for a third awaits this Friday when No. 19 Orange Lutheran (Calif.) makes the trip to Las Vegas. Led by Nebraska QB commit TJ Lateef, the Lancers (3-0) are currently the No. 4 program in California.

7. Atascocita (Texas)

Previous Ranking: No. 10 (+3)
It was a dog fight for three quarters, but the Atascocita offense managed to pull away late from Katy in a major 41-24 win on the road. Headlined by Oklahoma RB commit Tory Blaylock, the Eagles’ offense looks explosive and has already accumulated 76 points through two games. There’s not much time for rest, as another monumental test away from home awaits this Friday when Atascocita (2-0) travels to Austin to take on No. 11 Westlake in an early undefeated showdown.

8. DeSoto (Texas)

Previous Ranking: No. 3 (-5)
For the first time in nearly two years, DeSoto felt defeat last weekend. The Eagles (1-1) were stunned at home by now-No. 9 North Crowley, falling 57-51 in a slobberknocker. Depsite leading by 11 in the fourth quarter, DeSoto’s defense wasn’t able to put a stop to North Crowley’s offense, resulting in one of the most surprising results across the nation so far this year. The Eagles will look to get back on track this Friday on the road in Corpus Christi against Miller.

9. North Crowley (Texas)

Previous Ranking: No. 20 (+11)
The Panthers showed some serious moxie last weekend, upending back-to-back state champion DeSoto. UNLV RB commit Cornelius Warren helped lead the way, rushing for four touchdowns. North Crowley (2-0) will be riding high when it takes the field at home for the first time this season on Friday, though another nationally-ranked opponent in No. 10 Guyer awaits.

10. Guyer (Texas)

Previous Ranking: No. 8 (-2)
After beginning its season with a nationally-ranked victory over Aledo, Guyer returned home last week and delivered some more offensive pop in a 39-18 win over Martin. The Wildcats rushed for nearly 300 yards in the win, providing some cushion for Oklahoma QB commit Kevin Sperry and Co. They’ll now head to Fort Worth this weekend for the seismic clash against red-hot North Crowley.
