The National Federation of State High School Associations Rules Committee recommended four rule changes to high school football equipment. After the committee’s January meeting, the NFHS Board of Directors approved all revisions, eight in total.

After the amendments, Rule 1-5-3c(2) now allows coaches to use electronic communication during games through play signals and non-audio methods. However, players cannot watch videos or engage in in-helmet communication. In another rule, players cannot wear cameras, microphones, or any equipment that could transmit audio or video during the game.

Likewise, the Board of Directors also approved enhanced requirements for tooth and mouth protectors. Under Rule 1-5-1d(5), tooth and mouth protectors must not have any attachments that do not help protect the teeth and mouth. The protectors used by high school football players must not contain material that could pose danger as well.

Meanwhile, an addition to Rule 1-5-2d specifies arm sleeve specifications. The revised rule which will take into effect in 2027 states:

“Arm sleeves, whether attached to a shirt or unattached, manufactured to enhance contact with the football or opponent, must meet the SFIA (Sports and Fitness Industry Association) specification at the time of manufacture. Arm sleeves must have a permanent, exact replica of the SFIA arm sleeve seal (meets SFIA specification), that must be visible and appear legibly on the exterior of the arm sleeve.”

The SFIA states that the new specifications will consider current high school football rules regarding player gloves. In addition to player equipment changes, the NFHS revised Rule 4-3-1 or when the ball goes out of bounds. The new changes state that the ball will be spotted where it was fumbled, not where it rolled out.

Finally, there’s NFHS committee approved a deletion in Rule 10-4-4b, leading to consistent enforcement rules regarding participation fouls. You may visit the NFHS website to see the complete listing of these rule changes.
