David Green is more used to coaching his Texas high school football team at Newman International Academy Gibbins campus in Arlington. However, while also serving as the coach, he’s also the school’s athletic director. Therefore, he must step up to address the concerns under his watch, even if it takes drastic measures.

Therefore, as Dallas Morning News reporter Myah Taylor wrote, Green took over as the school’s cheerleading coach after failing to find a replacement. The previous cheer coach resigned because she was pregnant.

At first, some of the cheerleading team’s members were skeptical of the change. However, Green won them over by showing that he genuinely cares about figuring out their routine for the state championship.

Despite having no experience in mentoring cheerleaders, Green took over the role, because they badly need a coach. After all, the team only had four weeks to prepare for the state championship. However, Green had to brush up on his cheerleading knowledge if he were to fulfill this job. Hence, he enlisted one of his coaching assistants who had cheerleading experience.

As Green gained more cheerleading knowledge, he had the crew’s 26 members undergo two-a-day football-like training. Out of that number, he recruited five of his Texas high school football players to join the cheerleading team.

Likewise, Green ensured that there was no idle time during practices. As a group of cheerleaders learned the routine, another group was already honing their moves. The retired firefighter was also their leading critic, making sure every detail from their moves to their facial expressions was perfect.

Their sacrifices paid off after Newman International won the Texas Charter School Academic & Athletic League cheer state championship last January 18. Everyone involved in the program was brimming with pride after the victory.

As Green accomplishes his mission, he will trade the pompoms for the helmets and pads of Texas high school football.
