When the Oklahoma high school football 2025 season opens up on the week of Aug. 28th, one of the state’s primetime matchups will be held at a collegiate facility.

According to a report by the Tulsa World, an Aug. 28 tilt between state powers Bixby and Owasso will be held at the University of Tulsa‘s H.A. Chapman Stadium. The contest is a rematch of last year’s Class 6AI state championship game, in which the Spartans pulled off a 43-42 thriller after losing the 2024 season opener to the Rams.

“I think it’s a great partnership — Bixby and Owasso, QuikTrip and TU. And it’s a great experience for the players, for the band kids and for the families of all of the kids who are involved. Great venue. Great experience,” Bixby High School athletic director Kate Creekmore said via the Tulsa World report.

The game between the two schools is known as the Battle of the Burbs and the 2022, 2023 editions of the contest were held at Tulsa’s H.A. Chapman Stadium before being moved to Owasso’s home field last year. Now with an expected attendance to surpass last year’s totals, the game heads back to the home of the Golden Hurricane, which can seat over 30,000 spectators.

Per the report, the 2022 meeting attracted nearly 22,000 people and in 2023 brought over 12,000.

Both teams are expected to be once again the top contenders for the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association’s (OSSAA) Class 6AI state championship with the elite talent they both possesses.

The Spartans, who come in ranked No. 10 nationally in the Rivals Way-Too-Early National High School Football Top 25 Rankings, have won 10 state championships over the last 11 seasons. Bixby returns starting quarterback Carson Kirby, who threw for 2,976 yards and 34 touchdowns in 2024.

Along with Kirby, Bixby has plenty of Power 4 level talent littered along their roster, including 2026 four-star offense tackle Kaeden Penny and host of future Big12 defenders in linebackers Trey McGothlin (Oklahoma State) and Cord Nolan (Texas Tech) and safety Emory Snyder (West Virginia).

The Rams themselves are not lacking for talent, especially on the defensive side of the football. Owasso’s defense features a pair of Oklahoma State 2026 commitments in defensive tackle Tajh Overton and safety Carter Langenderfer.

Owasso’s offense is plenty experienced as well, with quarterback Drew Frankenfield back under center after throwing for 2,671 yards and 35 touchdown in ’24.
