Aaron Rodgers explains how his 2022 performance impacts future decision
Aaron Rodgers came into this season coming off back-to-back MVPs after leading Green Bay to a 26-7 record in that stretch. It was going to be hard to duplicate that for a third straight campaign but, with the way his season and the season as a whole for the Packers went, it wasn’t exactly anyone’s idea of Rodgers potentially ‘riding off into the sunset’.
Still, Rodgers says the way this season went for him personally and for the team will have no effect on his decision to potentially return for a 19th season. He’s secure in what he has accomplished in the NFL. Rodgers also knows that, even if this isn’t it for him, you very rarely go out on top.
“Not really. I mean I have a lot of pride in what I’ve accomplished in this league,” said Rodgers. “In a lot of ways, we shouldn’t have been in this position with some of the games that we lost. Especially in that stretch of five games. But this is the reality we’re in and, obviously, we didn’t get it done tonight.”
“You want to go out winning the Super Bowl. But it’s very rare that that actually gets to happen,” Rodgers said. “You don’t wanna lose your last game and miss out on the playoffs. But this is a great profession and a really tough business. It doesn’t always end with rainbows for everybody.

Rodgers finished with the least amount of passing yards (3,695) in a full season of his since 2015. His touchdowns (26) were double digits away from what he threw during his MVP years in 2020 and 2021. He very nearly tied his career-high in interceptions too as he finished with 12.
That ‘down’ year for the four-time All-Pro led the Packers to a disappointing 8-9 record this season. Their home loss in the finale against the Detroit Lions then caused them to miss the postseason for the first time since 2018.
If Rodgers wants to call it a career, this season’s performance isn’t going to make or break his decision. Not every Hall of Famer leaves out with a ring and, with that in mind, he is at peace with making this decision regardless of how he and the Packers ended their year.
