Report: Packers 'open to moving on' from Aaron Rodgers because of Jordan Love, salary cap issues
The Green Bay Packers are open to moving on from Aaron Rodgers, according to SI’s Albert Breer.
Rodgers has yet to decide his playing future after his darkness retreat, whether to retire or return to football. But Breer reported the Packers face salary cap issues and are reportedly ready to fully embrace Jordan Love as the starting quarterback.
Breer broke down the latest with Rodgers, who faces a potential 15th season as the Packers’ starter or going elsewhere.
“The previous two offseasons, Green Bay’s focus was singular—get Rodgers back in the fold,” Breer wrote. My sense is that focus was born of Rodgers’s own excellence, the roster’s makeup (very win now), and the uneasiness of Jordan Love’s readiness to take over. It left them waiting Rodgers out for five months in 2021, and giving him an unprecedented contract to play an 18th season in Green Bay, and a 15th season as Packers starter, in ’22.
This year is different. They’re open to moving Rodgers. They have questions on backside-of-their-prime vets such as David Bakhtiari, with some cap issues to work through. And where they were worried about Love’s development a year ago, they’re now seeing a guy capable of starting—at the very least—with considerable upside.”
Love saw some game action this season but has yet to get a full load of starts and extended action. He’s a former first-round pick that was scrutinized among other young quarterbacks.
But now, it looks like the Packers are ready to go all-in with Love and part ways with Rodgers after nearly two decades together.

Rodgers is still under contract with the Packers in 2023, but many expect him to be traded. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that the Jets reached out to Green Bay about Rodgers’ availability.
Rodgers finished the 2022 season with 3,695 passing yards, 26 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. His 12 interceptions were the most since his first full season as a starter in 2008.
“Do I still think I can play?” Rodgers said of his future. “Of course. Of course. Can I play at a high level? Yeah, the highest. I think I can win MVP again, in the right situation.”
He led the Packers to a 9-8 record but the team did not make the playoffs after losing the final game of the season to the Detroit Lions.
