Adam Schefter believes Aaron Rodgers wants to play in 2025, sees Rams as team that 'appeals' to QB

Aaron Rodgers could lean towards playing in 2025 but he might have to wait for the Matthew Stafford domino to fall.

Now that Rodgers is gone from the New York Jets, ESPN’s Adam Schefter believes Rodgers wants to play one more season, but it’s still a “TBD” on where.

That’s where Stafford comes in, since there’s been trade rumors about the Super Bowl winning quarterback. If Stafford is gone from LA, well, you can see where this is going.

“With Aaron, I think we start with the fact that you have to see where Matthew (Stafford is) gonna go,” Schefter said on The Pat McAfee Show. “Is Matthew going back to LA, or is he not going to LA, because if he’s not going to LA, I’m sure that LA appeals to Aaron Rodgers. That would be my guess. You would know probably better than I, but I believe that Aaron wants to play. 

“I believe he wants to play at least another year. I believe he’s got a chip on his shoulder. He wants to come back and play this upcoming season and show people that he still has the juice and still can get it done. So I think he’s gonna play.”

The Rams are actually the betting favorite to sign Rodgers in free agency. A California native, Rodgers famously looked like he’d go to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL Draft back in 2005.

So why not take a trip back to the West Coast?

The Los Angeles Rams are now listed at +300 to sign Rodgers, according to DraftKings. They join the Pittsburgh Steelers and Las Vegas Raiders as the three favorites to land the four-time MVP after he parts ways with the Jets.

Rodgers spent two years with the Jets after coming over from the Green Bay Packers, but his first season in New York ended on his first drive of the 2023 season due to an Achilles injury. In 2024, he threw for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns, along with 11 interceptions – marking two straight full seasons with at least 10 picks.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport recently reported Stafford plans to play in 2025, but he and the Rams will likely need to work out a new deal if he wants to stay in Los Angeles. FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz reported Wednesday that McVay wants to keep Stafford, but the belief is a first-round pick would likely need to be in the compensation if the Rams want to make a trade.
