The Atlanta Falcons released a short teaser video debuting their new throwback uniform look for this year, and which game they’ll be worn for. The Falcons will be pairing their 1966 throwback jerseys with their old red helmet look for their Week 6 matchup with the San Francisco 49ers.

Falcons bring back red helmets for throwback uniforms

The video shows off the iconic look of their inaugural 1966 team, as cornerback A.J. Terrell suits up in the new uniform. It ends with a date for their debut this season, which is their matchup with the 49ers. The team’s website describes the details in the uniforms, including their historical ties to the University of Georgia.

“Paying homage to the club’s inaugural squad, the red helmet features a grey facemask with a throwback black Falcon crest logo trimmed in white and a black stripe down the middle of the helmet trimmed in white and gold. The helmet’s color scheme was designed to represent rival schools Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia. Atlanta wore this version of the helmet from 1966 to 1969 before removing the gold trim for the 1970 season,” reads the Falcons’ release.

Atlanta first introduced this uniform in 2009 to honor their 1966 squad, and wore the red helmets twice per year until the NFL prohibited teams from wearing more than one helmet type. The throwback uniforms came back in 2016 without the red helmets, but the original look remained impossible at the time. Now, the NFL has given teams the okay for a second helmet in the 2022 season — when combined with throwback, color rush or alternate uniforms.

The Falcons begin the 2022 season in unusual fashion after trading longtime quarterback Matt Ryan to the Indianapolis Colts. On top of overhaul at the quarterback position, star receiver Calvin Ridley was suspended indefinitely by the NFL for betting on games.
