WATCH: Bengals blunder cost them chance at Super Bowl, sends Chiefs to Super Bowl
The Kansas City Chiefs won the 2023 AFC Championship Game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday evening, punching their tickets to the Super Bowl. The Chiefs were driving and trying to get in field goal range, when quarterback Patrick Mahomes took off down the right sideline on 3rd and 4. The clock was running down to just under 10 seconds when Mahomes finally made his way to the right sideline on his gimpy ankle. The problem was, he was being chased by Cincinnati EDGE Joseph Ossai, who had an excellent game, but one really costly mistake. Right as Mahomes got out of bounds, Ossai pushed the Kansas City star quarterback down on the Bengals’ sideline, drawing a 15-yard personal foul penalty, setting the Chiefs up in field goal range. Ossai also tumbled into his own bench.
Check out the play here.
Chiefs’ kicker Harrison Butker would drill the game-winning 45-yard kick in the final seconds to lift Kansas City to a 23-20 victory in regulation. Following the end of the game, CBS cameras saw Ossai on the Bengals’ bench, distraught about his costly mistake. It’s a tough way for the game to end for Cincinnati and especially Ossai, who played his tail off on Sunday evening.

Bengals’ teammates were consoling him after the loss
Bengals defensive end Cam Sample came over to console Ossai on the bench, as he was sobbing in tears after the game. Ossai finished with five tackles, one tackle for loss, one pass deflection, and two quarterback hits. He was very active for most of the evening, and you heard his name called by the CBS Sports announcers several times throughout the game.
It’s a tough way for the Bengals’ season to end, but Sunday’s game was yet another classic AFC Championship matchup. With all the weapons on their roster, they’ll likely be back soon, but they’ll have to figure out the different contracts for their stars, including Joe Burrow, who won’t be cheap. Managing the different contracts looms large for the Bengals’ franchise in the near future.
