Big Ten admits officiating error during UCLA vs. Oregon on two-point conversion
The Big Ten has admitted to an officiating error during UCLA vs. Oregon, the conference said in a statement. The sequence occurred on a two-point conversion, which drew a strong reaction from Ducks head coach Dan Lanning at the time.
With 2:16 to play in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s matchup, Oregon went for a two-point conversion when the referees threw a flag for a facemask penalty on UCLA. The Ducks had just scored to cut the Bruins’ lead to 17-15, and the conversion would have tied the game.

However, the ball was spotted at the 1.5-yard line, walked off from the original line of scrimmage from the first attempt. By rule, according to the Big Ten, the ball should have instead been at the half-yard line based on where the run ended.
“Following the first attempt that resulted in a personal foul penalty for a facemask on the UCLA defense, the ball was spotted for the second attempt half-the-distance to the goal from the original line of scrimmage of the first attempt,” the Big Ten’s statement read.
“Per rule, the ball should have been spotted half-the-distance to the goal from the end of the run of the first attempt. The Big Ten has been in contact with its officiating team from Saturday’s game regarding the error and will continue to emphasize consistent application of the playing rules.”
After Oregon’s failed conversion attempt, the Ducks forced a UCLA three-and-out to get the ball back. But the final drive ended with a sequence of laterals as the Bruins held on for the 17-15 win to continue their undefeated start to the season.
Dylan Raiola started Saturday’s game between UCLA and Oregon, but was later benched in favor of Brock Thomas. Raiola went 6-for-19 for 43 yards, along with two interceptions, while Thomas completed 11 of 15 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown in the effort.
On the UCLA side, Wayne Knight had another big game to lead the rushing attack. He took 22 carries for 103 yards and a touchdown while adding a receiving score, which eventually became the game-winner. The Bruins also lost quarterback Nico Iamaleava to injury and Ty Diffenbach took over for the second half.
UCLA is now 5-0 under new head coach Bob Chesney as the Bruins get ready to welcome Wisconsin in Week 7. Oregon fell to 3-2 on the year and will get ready for a matchup against Nebraska at Autzen Stadium on Saturday night.
