The Philadelphia Eagles promoted quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson to offensive coordinator, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Johnson replaced Shane Steichen, who left to take the head coaching position with the Indianapolis Colts. Johnson finished his second year as quarterbacks coach with the Eagles after spending time as the Florida Gators offensive coordinator.

Johnson has a close relationship with quarterback Jalen Hurts and was a huge part of his development over the last two seasons.

“Eagles are promoting their QB coach Brian Johnson to offensive coordinator to replace new Colts’ HC Shane Steichen, per sources,” Schefter wrote on Twitter. “Johnson had multiple opportunities for other OC jobs, but he ultimately stays with the Eagles.”

Johnson played quarterback at the University of Utah but went undrafted in 2009. He played for the New York Sentinels in 2009 in the United Football League but pivoted to coaching in 2010 with Utah as the quarterbacks coach.

He worked his way up to offensive coordinator but ended up at Mississippi State in 2014 as the QBs coach. He was the offensive coordinator in 2017 with Houston and ended up in Florida in 2018 as the quarterbacks coach.

Johnson initially recruited Hurts to Florida when the latter transferred out of Alabama. Johnson and Hurts knew each other during the quarterback’s childhood and now they stay together in Philadelphia.

Johnson was promoted from within with the Eagles rather than go elsewhere. He was a big reason for Hurts nearly winning the MVP award in 2022 and getting Philadelphia to Super Bowl LVII.

Hurts was honest after his epic performance against the Chiefs. All he focused on was the Eagles’ loss and how the team would bounce back in the future.

“You either win, or you learn,” Hurts said postgame. “I’m big on self-reflection and reflecting on the things I could have done better, so I think I’m going to challenge everyone, and I’ve already challenged everyone, to think about those things. Look at yourself in the mirror and be able to learn from everything …

“It is a tough feeling to come up short. It’s a very tough feeling. But I know that the only direction is to rise. And that’ll be the M.O. going forward. That is the mentality.”

Hurts and the Eagles finished 16-4 (including the playoffs) this season and made their second Super Bowl appearance in six seasons. It was Hurts’ first, and potentially not last, crack at the big game.
