Bryson DeChambeau wears hat with spelling error at PGA Championship

When you look at the leaderboard for the PGA Championship, it’s obvious that Bryson DeChambeau had a pretty good day on Thursday. But even a really good afternoon on the golf course comes with a few flubs. The biggest one involving the 29-year-old LIV Golf star? Spelling.

DeChambeau wore a hat with the misspelled name of one of his sponsors. Instead of the right side of the hat reading “NetJets,” it read, “NetIets.”

Tough break, Bryson. At least that spelling error didn’t occur on the front of the hat. Nobody probably even noticed anything wrong with DeChambeau’s hat until it was plastered all over Twitter.

DeChambeau carded a 4-under-par 66 in the opening round of the PGA Championship from Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York. He carded three birdies on the front nine. The back nine was a bit more of a roller coaster, scoring three additional birdies but making two bogeys, as well.

Behind DeChambeau, there’s a five-way tie for second at -3 after Thursday’s round. Scottie Scheffler, Corey Conners, Thomas Pieters, Adam Scott and Dustin Johnson all shot 67 to begin the tournament.

DeChambeau is looking to add a second major championship to his list of career accomplishments in golf. His lone major came at the 2020 U.S. Open.

DeChambeau’s errant tee shot hits fellow golfer

Well, the misspelling on DeChambeau’s hat wasn’t the only blunder of the day for DeChambeau. One of his tee shots from Thursday afternoon plunked a fellow golfer.

DeChambeau lost serious control of his driver on one hole and Kenny Pigman had no chance to escape. Pigman ducked in an attempt to avoid the golf ball, but it still struck him in the back.

It didn’t seem to do too much damage. Pigman appeared to be just fine — though we’re sure it didn’t feel all that great when it happened. DeChambeau also walked over to issue an apology for the incident.

Typically, you’d think that if DeChambeau was hitting drives like that, he might not be having the best day on the course. Instead, he enjoyed a day better than anyone else at Oak Hill.

Pigman, on the other hand, had a day to forget. Not only did he get plunked by a golf ball, he shot an 11-over-par 81 in the first round of the PGA Championship. He carded seven bogeys and a pair of double bogeys without scoring a single birdie.

Second round action from the PGA Championship begins Friday.
