Cardinals defensive end JJ Watt reveals he had a cardiac event this week requiring medical attention
JJ Watt revealed he had to have his heart shocked back into rhythm Thursday. The three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year made the announcement after he caught wind that the news was to be leaked ahead of the Cardinals matchup against the Carolina Panthers.
“I was just told somebody leaked some personal information about me and it’s going to be reported on today. I went into A-Fib on Wednesday, had my heart shocked back into rhythm on Thursday and I’m playing today,” Watt’s tweet read. “That’s it.”
A-Fib, or atrial fibrillation, is an irregular and often very rapid heart rhythm (arrhythmia) that can lead to blood clots in the heart. The condition increases the risk of stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Watt is planning to play, and his status will surely be monitored throughout Sunday’s game. Kickoff between the Cardinals and Panthers is set for 4:05 p.m. ET live from Charlotte

Just a week prior, Tagovailoa left Miami’s Week 2 matchup against Buffalo and was thought to have a concussion. The team called it back problem and he was cleared of any type of head issue. Tagovailoa played the entire second half and helped the Dolphins get a crucial win.

After Thursday’s moment, questions were asked of Miami and their concussion protocol testing. Now, there has been a move made according to a report. According to ESPN, the “unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant” involved in clearing Tagovailoa has been fired.
“The unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant involved in clearing Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa during Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills has been fired after it was found he made ‘several mistakes’ in his evaluation, a league source told ESPN,” the article said.
After the game was over, Tagovailoa was somehow released from the hospital and was able to travel home with the team. Even though that’s positive news, some kind of change will have to come from the NFL. While the consultant may have been “unaffiliated” with Miami, the scary scene should be enough to switch the approach to concussions.
