The Carolina Panthers signed defensive back TJ Carrie to the active roster on Tuesday, adding the veteran defensive back to the 53-man roster. Carrie had been elevated from the practice squad and played in the past few games for the Panthers.

Carrie played on defense and special teams for the Panthers in the last two games, a loss to the Baltimore Ravens and then a win over the Denver Broncos. Against the Broncos, Carrie forced and recovered a fumble.

In a corresponding move to fill the open spot on the practice squad, the Panthers have signed quarterback Davis Cheek. The Panthers were likely looking for a quarterback after granting the request of former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield and releasing him.

Rams claim quarterback Baker Mayfield off waivers following Panthers’ release

It didn’t take long for the former number one overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, quarterback Baker Mayfield to find a new home. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Mayfield did not make it through the waiver wire and has been picked up by the Los Angeles Rams.

With the Rams not taking a chance on seeing whether or not he would clear waivers now makes them responsible for the remaining portion of his contract. Los Angeles inherits a $1.35 million remaining salary on the former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks contract.

With Los Angeles struggling to find answers at quarterback now that their star starting quarterback and fellow former number one overall pick Matthew Stafford is out with an injury, Mayfield could be in line for immediate playing time. The Former Carolina Panther and ex-Cleveland Brown could possibly play in the Rams’ Thursday night matchup versus the Las Vegas Raiders.
