CeeDee Lamb shares what he believes Cowboys, Dak Prescott need to take next step
Dallas Cowboys receiver CeeDee Lamb had a simple response when asked this week about what his team, and quarterback, need to take the next step in 2023. As many others have voiced after watching the power imbalance around Dak Prescott and Brock Purdy in their playoff matchup, Lamb believes the offense needs more weapons.
Careful not to step on his teammates’ pride, the former first-rounder said even one more major weapon could do the trick.
“You’ve got to surround him. Straight like that,” Lamb said on the Around the NFL podcast on Wednesday. “Look at the Eagles. They’ve got three receivers. Great tight end group. They run the ball well. O-Line is very phenomenal. You look at San Fran. They’ve got, they surrounded their quarterback. You get success ultimately.”
“I mean granted we’ve got just as, as many weapons, but that extra player, or that one, all it takes is one,” Lamb continued. “You can be so close, in that, to the Super Bowl that they can be a deciding factor.
“So I feel like just keeping him comfortable in the pocket, just keeping him surrounded with whatever as far, production should I say, and you’ve got to stay healthy.”
Lamb advocates for more weapons for Prescott
Dallas has several opportunities to add to the roster’s list of offensive weapons soon, whether via the draft or free agency. After Jerry Jones admitted he may have relied too heavily on those not named Lamb after the Amari Cooper trade last offseason, he could be more motivated to fix the issue with a big move this spring.
As for Prescott, Lamb heartily defended his quarterback against what he believes is more criticism than anyone else receives.
“I don’t think anyone deserves the criticism he gets,” Lamb said on Pro Football Talk Live. “They are crazy, bro. You’ve got to understand. It’s football. A lot of other people get paid to make plays… the way that he gets talked about is crazy. It’s wild. I don’t think he deserves it.”
With his massive contract, Prescott is locked in for at least another year for Dallas, if not many more years. Lamb is still on his rookie contract but could be looking at a fifth-year option pickup soon. The duo will team up again in 2023 to try to get the Cowboys back to the playoffs – and hopefully, to the next step.
