To start the 2025 NASCAR season, Chase Briscoe was hit with a massive penalty. Just days after the Daytona 500 the No. 19 team is in a hole. With a whopping negative 67 points, Briscoe is hoping to overcome the early deficit to make the playoffs.

This is the second time that Chase Briscoe has been hit with a 100+ point penalty in the Next Gen era. The last time came while he was at Stewart-Haas Racing when his team used an illegally manufactured duct piece.

Briscoe was hit with a tough penalty. So, what does he think of it? As far as changing his mindset this year, he isn’t going to let that happen.

“I would say this year my approach is way different in general,” Briscoe said on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. “We should be able to go to the race track and contend for wins on a lot more consistent basis. So, you know, my whole approach going into this year was trying to win multiple races and that doesn’t change. The points situation obviously is unfortunate, but I mean, we still just need to go win races at the end of the day.

“That’s what we’re here to do is try to win races and you know, potentially try to win a championship, too. To have a chance to win a championship you need to be winning races, anyway. So, yeah, it doesn’t change the approach at all. I don’t even think from a strategy standpoint or anything, it changes anything. You just go there and try to win the race and you know, hopefully, our cars are good enough to do that.”

Driving the No. 19 car at Joe Gibbs Racing is a big deal. Chase Briscoe has the opportunity to take that next step in his career. A lot of people in NASCAR believe that Briscoe hasn’t been given the opportunities to truly flourish in the Cup Series. He has that now.

Chase Briscoe has chance to compete for multiple wins

The goal for every JGR driver is to win races. Denny Hamlin, Christopher Bell, Ty Gibbs – all three of those drivers and their teams expect wins. Crew chief James Small expects the same out of his driver in the 19 car.

Joe Gibbs Racing is going to appeal the 100-point penalty to Chase Briscoe’s team. Given how these appeals have gone in the past, I’m not too sure this is going to actually change anything. But on the off chance it does, any additional points he can get back will be gladly accepted.

When Briscoe says his goal is to win multiple races, he isn’t wrong. He has the talent, JGR has the equipment, and given the right opportunity, I expect that they will at least win once in 2025.

Being -67 points in the red is not ideal. There is no denying that. Nothing a win or two can’t fix, though.
