Cleveland Browns select Luke Wypler in 6th round of 2023 NFL Draft

Former Ohio State offensive lineman Luke Wypler has landed at his new NFL home. After declaring for the 2023 NFL Draft following just a three-year career in Columbus, Wypler was selected by the Cleveland Browns with the No. 19 overall pick in the sixth round.

Wypler’s entrance into the professional ranks comes after a brief but impressive collegiate career with the Buckeyes. Like most true freshmen, Wypler didn’t see a ton of action his first year on campus. But by his sophomore season, he emerged as a full-time center and started 26 games there over his second and third season with the program.

This past fall, during the 2022 season, he was especially strong in pass protection and was only charged with giving up one sack all year long, and that came against a dominant Georgia pass rush in the College Football Playoff semifinals. Given his young age and terrific production in the last couple seasons, Wypler projects as a very promising long term pro.

Wypler played high school football at Montvale (NJ) St. Joseph, where he was a four-star prospect and the No. 123 overall player in the 2020 class, according to the On3 Industry Rankings.

What NFL Draft analysts are saying about Luke Wypler

NFL analyst Lance Zierlein broke down Wypler’s profile over on NFL.com, where he wrote the following about the former Buckeye star:

“Two-year starter at center for an explosive Ohio State offense. Wypler is undersized but highly athletic. His initial quickness gets him to the best angles, whether he’s cutting off linebackers or reaching and sealing outside zone blocks. He’s capable of pulling and leading the action in space, and is best suited for a move-based running attack. His lack of size and length will show up when working downhill, where struggles to sustain. He’s aware in pass protection but big bull rushers are a cause for concern. Wypler is a good technician and capable of becoming an average starter in the right scheme.”

So, per the NFL analyst, some concerns over Wypler’s physical traits, that he may not have the satisfactory size to match up against the league’s best interior pass rushers; however, he is athletic. But overall, a lot to like about his profile according to the pundits.
