Cleveland Browns sign tight end Jesse James to active roster

The Cleveland Browns signed tight end Jesse James to their active roster Sunday, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. He will likely serve as the third team tight end behind David Njoku and Harrison Bryant.

A fifth round pick out of Penn State in the 2015 NFL Draft, James has totaled 157 catches for 1,522 yards and 12 touchdowns across his career. The Browns will be the fourth team he has played for in his eight NFL seasons. He was most recently of the Chicago Bears in 2021, where he appeared in 14 games with nine starts and caught seven passes for 62 yards and a touchdown.

James’ most productive seasons came early in his career with the Steelers. Across a three-year span from 2016-18, he made 112 catches for 1,133 yards and eight touchdowns.

Although he is expected to be the third string tight end, Jesse James should have plenty of opportunity to see the field for the Browns. Cleveland ran a lot of packages with two or three tight ends last season, and James’ 6-foot-7 frame makes him valuable as a blocker.

The Browns are set to kick off the 2022 regular season at 1 p.m. ET on Sept. 11 against Carolina.

Browns claim quarterback Kellen Mond

Tuesday was a tough day for Kellen Mond, but Wednesday proved to bring greener pastures.

To illustrate, the former Texas A&M signal caller was cut by the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday, the franchise who drafted him in the third round at one point in time. While the new regime in Minnesota didn’t believe in Mond, it’s evident at least one team does, as the Cleveland Browns claimed the quarterback on Wednesday.

“The Browns have claimed QB Kellen Mond,” tweeted Field Yates of ESPN.

Moreover, Mond only threw three passes for five yards during one game for the Vikings last year. He had played okay in Minnesota’s 2022 preseason games, though, with no real flashes. Mond threw for a 56.9% completion percentage for 303 yards and a pair of touchdowns. In the end, it wasn’t enough to keep his spot on the roster.

Minnesota drafted Mond in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft after four years in College Station. During his career at Texas A&M, Mond threw for over 9,600 yards and rushed for an additional 1,609. He totaled 71 touchdowns with his arm and 22 more with his legs.
