The Dallas Cowboys managed to re-sign safety Donovan Wilson on Tuesday but negotiations continue for another top defender. According to NFL Network’s Jane Slater, the Cowboys are trying to “hammer something out” with linebacker Leighton Vander Esch. However, with the negotiation period in full swing, Dallas now has competition.

“I’m told the #Cowboys are still trying to hammer something out with LB Leighton Vander Esch but as they do another team has entered the picture,” Slater shared. “After Bobby Okereke deal, expect negotiations to start around 7 APY.”

The Okereke deal Slater referenced is for four years, $40 million with $22 million guaranteed. Dallas locked Wilson in for three years at $24 million. Vander Esch played the 2022 season on a one-year, $2 million contract.

On top of negotiations with Vander Esch, the Cowboys have also reportedly reached out to veteran free agent Bobby Wagner.

This season, Vander Esch led the defense in tackles until he suffered a neck injury that kept him out for multiple weeks. He returned to the field in time for playoffs, however.
