Dallas Cowboys tight end Dalton Schultz suffered an ankle injury during practice Wednesday, according to NFL Network’s Jane Slater.

He appeared to tweak his right ankle area on a play in the end zone. Schultz walked to the medical tent on his own power and later ran off the field for further evaluation.

Schultz had been very impressive in the past year for the Cowboys and was making the tight end battle even more intriguing between he and starting tight end Blake Jarwin.

He recently spoke about the more snaps he saw in 2020, and how much that helped his development. After just seeing 417 snaps in his first two seasons, Schultz saw 973 snaps in 2020, while registering 14 starts. He spoke about his development in an article on CowboysWire.

“It definitely helps with my confidence,” Schultz said back in May. “But I say that, and I had a lot of confidence going into last year before any of those catches in those games happened. If anything, I just think it kind of springboarded my confidence in myself and continued to lead me to focus even more on my techniques and hone in on that work with Dak [Prescott] and getting the little nuances down in certain coverages and different routes. So I think it opened the door to a whole new level of preparation, and I’m excited to continue to go forth in my preparation this year.”

In the Cowboys’ training camp in Oxnard, California, Schultz had been making plays all over the field.

In 2020, Schultz hauled in 63 catches for 615 receiving yards and four touchdowns. It was a career best season for him and by a long shot, so the Cowboys are hoping he gets healthy soon.

Schultz is currently locked in a battle for the starting tight end position with Blake Jarwin. Jarwin tore his ACL in September 2020. Jarwin tearing his ACL opened the door for more opportunities for Schultz. The Stanford product shined as a result.

Dalton Schultz’s Stanford Career

As a senior, Dalton Schultz was named to the All-Pac-12 first team in 2017. He hauled in 22 catches for 212 yards and three touchdowns. The Utah native averaged 9.6 yards per catch in his senior season.
