The Dallas Cowboys are cleaning house with their coaching staff this offseason. Earlier on Sunday night, it was reported that Kellen Moore would no longer be the offensive coordinator in Dallas. Then, later in the evening, news broke that Cowboys’ quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier will also not return to the franchise. His contract was finished at the end of the season and apparently had a few teams reach out to him, including one for an offensive coordinator role, according to Todd Archer of ESPN NFL Nation.

Nussmeier has been with the Cowboys since the 2018 season. During the 2018-2019 season, he coached the tight ends for Dallas, and has been coaching the quarterbacks there since 2020. He’s got an extensive amount of experience in the college football coaching ranks–serving as the offensive coordinator for Fresno State, Washington, Alabama, Michigan, and Florida.

Early in his college football coaching career, Nussmeier served as the quarterbacks coach for the Michigan State Spartans.

Doug Nussmeier enjoyed a prolific playing career with Idaho

During his college football playing career, Nussmeier played for the Idaho Vandals, where he enjoyed a prolific playing career. He became one of five quarterbacks in NCAA history to throw for at least 10,000 passing yards and rush for 1,000 yards. He peppered his name all over the record books for the Vandals, setting the career records for passing yards, touchdown passes (91), and total offense (12,054 yards), among other records.

His playing career in the National Football League wasn’t nearly as good. He was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the fourth round of the 1994 NFL Draft. Throughout his playing career in the NFL, he only played in eight regular season games, throwing for 455 passing yards, while tossing in one touchdown and four interceptions. He also spent time with the Denver Broncos and the Indianapolis Colts.
