The NASCAR community learned of a tragic loss over the weekend, as Coy Gibbs passed away during his sleep at the age of 49. Although his passing at such a young age was already a tragedy, his death comes at an absolutely shocking time — just hours after his son Ty Gibbs won the 2022 NASCAR Xfinity Series Championship.

Coy Gibbs passes away at 49

“It is with great sorrow that Joe Gibbs Racing confirms that Coy Gibbs (co-owner) went to be with the Lord in his sleep last night. The family appreciates all the thoughts and prayers and asks for privacy at this time,” read an official statement released by Joe Gibbs Racing.

Coy Gibbs was the vice chairman of Joe Gibbs Racing — named for his father and legendary NFL coach Joe Gibbs — and passed away in his sleep according to the official release. Coy Gibbs began his own football career as a standout linebacker at Stanford from 1991-1994, before switching career paths and becoming an Xfinity Series driver himself. Coy Gibbs ran 39 races as a driver and finished in the top ten twice during his racing career. He also was a driver in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series with 58 races and 21 top-ten finishes in that series.

Gibbs joined his father, Joe Gibbs, on NFL sidelines when he was re-hired by the Washington Commanders in 2004. Coy Gibbs worked as an Offensive Quality Control Assistant until 2007 with Washington.

Joe Gibbs Racing is one of the premier racing teams in the NASCAR Cup Series, currently fielding four cars driven by Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr. and Christopher Bell.

His passing is the second time Joe Gibbs and the Gibbs family has suffered a terrible loss recently — with Coy’s brother J.D. Gibbs also passing away at the age of 49 in January of 2019.
