Cowboys offensive coordinator reveals Dak Prescott's injury status

Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore confirmed that quarterback Dak Prescott is no longer facing limitations, according to The Athletic’s Jon Machota. Prescott is coming back from a severe ankle injury in 2020 and has been limited in practice since July 28 with a sore shoulder.

“I thought he looked great (yesterday),” said Moore. “We’re fired up. We’re not looking at anything from a limitation standpoint.”

The report comes just days before the Cowboys final preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Preseason plans

Multiple reports have indicated that Dak Prescott wants to play preseason, with his final chance coming on Sunday against the Jaguars. Another report suggests that the Cowboys are leaning toward holding Prescott out of all preseason games to keep him healthy.

“We’ll see how the week goes, but there’s no urgency from my perspective to see Dak play against Houston,” McCarthy said earlier this month. “This is more about we don’t want to create a setback possibly. His volume of throwing leading up to that point, I mean, he was probably in midseason form from the amount of work he put in over the summer, coming out of the OTAs. Just trying to get that volume back to where it belongs.”

He continued: “I think his volume throwing, getting the capacity back to where he was is the No. 1 thing.”

The Cowboys primary focus has been preparing Prescott for the regular season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Dallas will play in the NFL’s Thursday Night Kickoff on Sept. 9 at 8:20 p.m. ET.

Prescott’s New contract

The Cowboys long-term investment in Dak Prescott is part of the reason for the Cowboys’ preseason limitations. The team does not want to play him until every ache has gone away. This offseason, Dak Prescott got an early birthday present when he signed an extension with the Cowboys. The deal is four years, $160 million, according to Front Office Sports.

Around $40 million per year is a steep price to pay but it was necessary to build a contender. Prescott has been one of the best investments made by the Cowboys over the past 25 years.

After falling to Dallas in the fourth round, Prescott took over the starting job in year one and has never looked back. He had thrown for 17,634 yards with 106 touchdowns and 40 interceptions over the past five seasons. Prescott has added more than 1,000 yards on the ground and 24 rushing touchdowns over his career.
