Dak Prescott shares new details of recovery timeline, return from thumb injury
While watching the Dallas Cowboys trail the Philadelphia Eagles from the sideline on Sunday, Dak Prescott shared details of his injury. The Dallas star has been out for the past five weeks after suffering a fracture in his throwing hand at the base of his thumb, and he shared exactly how close to coming back onto the field he was.
Dak Prescott new injury details
“September 12th, he had surgery,” explained NBC’s Melissa Stark. “A plate and seven screws inserted to stabilize the fracture at the base of his right thumb. He told me he expects them to stay in permanently. He was given a four-to-six week return window, and next Sunday marks week six. In pregame warmups he said if it were up to him, 100 percent he would’ve played tonight. But that there’s been a plan in place and that he didn’t want to push it. He said his grip strength is an A right now, he wants it to be an A-plus.”
According to Prescott, his return to the field is pending the all-clear from Dallas and his trainers believing he’s fully recovered. The injury that Prescott suffered is one that doesn’t necessarily carry major risk of re-injury, but his hand’s health isn’t the troublesome part of the fracture — it was his ability to grip a football and make throws necessary for the NFL.
With his thumb limited in any capacity, control of the football would likely be difficult to the point where Dallas made the decision to continue using Cooper Rush in relief at the head of their offense. Rush has performed admirably in his role as backup, going undefeated as a starter and leading Dallas to a 4-1 record prior to Sunday’s matchup with the unbeaten Eagles.

Philadelphia took control of the game early and carried a 20-3 lead into halftime, and forced two interceptions from Rush — his first turnovers of the season.
Dallas will host the Detroit Lions in Week 7, and it’s likely that Prescott and Dallas will use that game as his return date. Despite Rush’s hot streak as a starter, Dallas is facing a third-place ranking in the NFC East division if they lose to Philadelphia. With a loss to the Eagles, Dallas would be at 4-2 on the year — behind the Philadelphia Eagles at 6-0 and the New York Giants at 5-1.
