CeeDee Lamb discusses his 'different' draft experience, viral moment with cell phone
During the 2019 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys selected wide receiver CeeDee Lamb out of Oklahoma in the first round. For Lamb, it was a dream come true, once in a lifetime experience. But thanks to the COVID-19 virus outbreak, his draft experience was unlike any other in recent history. During a recent interview on the Open Mike Podcast with Mike Silver, Lamb discusses his ‘different’ draft experience along with his viral cell phone incident.
“It was very different, you know; a lot of different detours. I had to cancel the main draft, couldn’t meet the commissioner, just like the small things… you kind of wish you had,” said Lamb. “Granted, the ultimate goal was to make it to the NFL, but obviously, I still wanted to walk that stage… For me to actually still be here, regardless of me walking or not, I’m very content with just being here. I must say, doing everything virtual on the screen, talking to a video camera, it’s a lot different.”
Silver finished up his questions on Lamb’s draft night, asking the young Cowboys star what the second phone incident was about.
“It was a force of habit. Force of habit, most definitely,” said Lamb when asked what made him repossess the other phone from the young lady sitting next to him.
Lamb explained that the phone he was on was a draft phone, and the other phone was his personal phone. While he was on the phone with Cowboys officials, his personal one began to ring off the hook with friends and family congratulating him on being selected by Dallas. Lamb also explained that the calls and texts didn’t stop there and that he had to “Turn my phone off for at least a week.”

CeeDee Lamb discusses becoming Dallas’ WR1
When Amari Cooper was traded from the Raiders to Dallas during the 2018 season, the offense exploded into one of the best in the league. Even with him now out of the organization, offensive coordinator Kellen Moore will be expected to keep the same production up. Lamb is a huge part of the plan.
Once Cooper left, Lamb said the standard for his performances immediately “raised” and he knew there was work to be done.
“Honestly, kind of, in a sense, it raised the standard,” said Lamb. “I hold myself to a high standard already but at this moment, nothing else you can do but take it on. That’s the energy I have.”
