Dallas Cowboys consider contract extensions for CeeDee Lamb, Trevon Diggs
Dallas Cowboys stars CeeDee Lamb and Trevon Diggs are not among the players on the team’s pending free agents list. However, this offseason presents an opportunity for the Dallas front office to lock the wideout and corner in with contract extensions.
Cowboys executive vice president and director of player personnel Stephen Jones addressed the potential for new deals this week.
“You always look at something like that,” Jones said at the scouting combine in Indianapolis, via Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News. “Looking for the right opportunities, the right situation. Obviously, they’re in our plans long term. Always look.”
Cowboys looking at extending young stars
After three years with Dallas, Lamb has a fifth-year option on his contract waiting for the Cowboys to pick up. Thanks to his performance so far, the former Oklahoma Sooners star is one of several 2020 first-rounders who qualify for the highest level of benefits for their fifth year.
Having made his second Pro Bowl in 2022, Lamb’s fifth-year option salary figure is $19,743,000 in 2024, according to numbers acquired by Albert Breer. A wide receiver going into his fourth year with two Pro Bowl bids has the third-most expensive fifth-year option.
Diggs, a second-round pick for Dallas in 2020, is going on Year 4 of his four-year, $6.32 million contract. He led the NFL in interceptions in 2021 and has two Pro Bowls under his belt in the first three years of his career.
Asked whether the Cowboys could announce new deals sooner, rather than later, Jones suggested that things will most likely drag out.
“Used to be people would be ready to go ahead and do something,” Jones said. “It seems like representatives, players are more patient to wait their turn. They feel like they probably got a little more leverage, those type of things.”
The Cowboys’ 20 pending free agents can begin contract negotiations on March 13. The league new year on March 15 marks the first day free agents can announce new deals.
