Dallas Cowboys: Jerry Jones sends strong message to Kelvin Joseph after fatal shooting incident
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has publicly addressed the Kelvin Joseph situation regarding his connection to a fatal shooting of a 20-year-old Dallas man, noting that Cowboys upper management has had ‘several discussions‘ about what to do with the former Kentucky and LSU standout defensive back.
“We obviously don’t need our players to be involved in situations that make this come up about your character,” Jones said. “He needs to be a good player on and off the field and we’re going to give him a chance to do that. [Our message to him is] Now get in here and be a good player, be a guy everybody depends on, and make your name in a positive way and clean it up.”
Joseph isn’t expected to be charged by the Dallas police, but Jones wants to see Joseph change his narrative in a positive way throughout training camp. Before moving on, Jones added that Joseph is having a “real good camp.”
The former SEC cornerback was cleared of any connection to the shooting by Dallas police earlier this month. The incident occurred at a club, and led to the death of 20-year old Cameron Ray. Joseph maintained from the night of the incident that he was not involved in the shooting — and that he was unarmed that night and was not looking for any violent encounters. Joseph and his lawyer stated that the incident escalated without his involvement or consent.

“There has been a lot of speculation over his availability after being a passenger in a car from where a fatal drive-by shooting took place late March in Dallas,” explained DallasCowboys.com’s Mickey Spagnola. “But I’ve learned, Joseph, who was not involved in the shooting, has been cleared by Dallas County officials, being truthful and forthcoming during the investigation, and remember he never was arrested or charged with anything.
“Now as for the NFL, that is a different matter, and its movement is at glacier speeds when coming to incidents such as this. The Cowboys have stood firm on the issue that the 22-year-old is good to go from a legal standpoint.”
Dallas selected Joseph with the 44th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft after playing one season for Mark Stoops at Kentucky. As a rookie, he appeared in ten games for the Cowboys and started in two of them and finished his rookie season with 16 tackles, two passes defended and a fumble recovery.
