In what seems like a familiar story for everyone involved, the Dallas Cowboys crashed out of the NFL playoffs early and in dramatic fashion. The San Francisco 49ers came to AT&T Stadium as the underdog, taking away another shot at a Super Bowl for owner Jerry Jones.
A lot of backlash has come toward Jones after the loss — ranging from media personalities to former players and even former coaches. Jimmy Johnson was the latest during an appearance on The Herd, calling out Jones’ decision making.
On Friday, Jones had the opportunity to respond to Johnson. When talking to TMZ in Los Angeles, the long-time Dallas Cowboys owner took the high road, responding to Johnson in a positive manner.
“Jimmy is a great teammate,” Jones said. “Great time with the Cowboys. We got the share a national championship, we go to share two Super Bowls. You couldn’t have had a couple of knotheads that have it better than Jimmy Johnson and I.”
Jones was responding to a quote where Johnson called the Cowboys owner out, saying his decision making has cost the franchise over the years. The Hall of Fame head coach cited not wanting to get rid of Jason Garrett after little playoff success for a decade plaus.

“Well yeah, Jerry, he doesn’t ever want to admit that he’s wrong you know,” said Johnson. “And so he’s gonna hang with whoever Jason Garrett or whoever and try to make it work. I think he really values the talent on that team such that he feels like McCarthy can be successful and he can improve; especially with Dan Quinn and with Kellen Moore with the assistance that he’s got. So that’s a big thing.”
Jones and Johnson go way back, playing college football together for the Arkansas Razorbacks. The two won the 1964 national championship under head coach Frank Broyles, where Jones was an offensive lineman and Johnson played on the defensive line.
Two of the franchise’s three Super Bowls in the 1990s were with Jones and Johnson working together. The head coach was hired away from the Miami Hurricanes just two seasons after winning a national championship in Coral Gables. Johnson won AP NFL Coach of the Year in 1990 before the two championships came in 1992 and 1993.
Johnson left Dallas in 1993 due to frustrations between him and Jones — as far as a working relationship goes. Jones told the head coach he would be in the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor before their Week 1 matchup against Tampa Bay but has yet to announce any plans for the ceremony.
