Dallas Cowboys provide status updates on injured safety Jayron Kearse, tackle Jason Peters

The Dallas Cowboys took down the Buccaneers in dominant fashion on Monday night but suffered injuries to two starters in the process. Safety Jayron Kearse and left tackle Jason Peters both started the wild card matchup, but did not finish as the Cowboys put the finishing touches on the 31-14 win.

Jayron Kearse hurt his knee during the second half of the game and after a pit stop in the medical tent, wound up on the exercise bike. After the game, Kearse, who was one of the team’s six game captains, told reporters he will be “good.” Prior to his exit, he had an interception in the end zone that killed off the Bucs’ best first-half drive.

“It’s feeling all right,” Kearse said of his knee. “I’ll be good. It’s feeling all right. It’ll be all right.”

As for Jason Peters who was making his second start of the season at left tackle, the Cowboys don’t expect him to play on Sunday versus the 49ers. He suffered a hip injury and his exit caused yet another shuffle along the offensive line. Rookie Tyler Smith moved back to left tackle from left guard while Connor McGovern returned to left guard after playing a full back role earlier in the game.

Cowboys safety Israel Mukuamu also tweaked his hamstring in the win on Monday. However, the team expects him to practice this week.

Russell Gage hospitalized after collision versus Cowboys

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Russell Gage had to get the cart to leave the field during the team’s wild-card game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Gage was targeted in the red zone in the fourth quarter as the Bucs attempted to salvage their 31-6 deficit. However, he slipped before the ball arrived. Dallas safety Donovan Wilson made contact with Gage’s neck. Gage attempted to get up multiple times but was not able to. A backboard was brought out and he was carted to the locker room and taken to a local hospital.

On Tuesday morning, the Buccaneers provided an update on Gage’s health:

“After suffering a neck injury and concussion during the fourth quarter of last night’s game, Russell was taken to a local hospital where he remained overnight for additional testing and observation,” the team statement read. “Russell has had movement in all extremities and will continue to undergo additional testing today. We will provide additional information as it becomes available.”
