The Dallas Cowboys will open their season in primetime, hosting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday Night Football. Quarterback Dak Prescott, who was thought to be healthy going into the year, now has the chance of showing up on the injury report this weekend.

Prescott said the reason he may be listed on the injury report is that if Dallas doesn’t, there is a chance to be fined. He left practice on Thursday with a supposed ankle injury but Prescott described it as “a little hangnail.” From at least what the quarterback is saying, there’s nothing to be worried about.

“Honestly, I feel great. Something may come up in the report, but as you know, that’s this league,” Prescott said. “If you don’t report a hangnail you’ll get fined. But I feel great. I still feel the best I’ve felt in a very, very long time. … Just a little hangnail.”

When pressed about the situation by reporters, Prescott reiterated he was going to be okay. Sunday night against Tampa Bay does not seem to be in doubt and during the game, he will not be limited.

“I’m good to go,” Prescott said. “I promise you I’m great.”

Dak Prescott testing new shoe out during practice

Prescott said the issue came from wearing a different set of shoes on Thursday. Switching to the Jordan 11s from the Jordan 1 cleats, Prescott said he was not fully comfortable in them. And with the history his ankles have, there was caution during Thursday’s practice.

“Dak Prescott said he was trying out some Jordan 11 cleats today, didn’t like the way they felt,” Jon Machota of The Athletic said. “He said he did not roll or tweak his ankle. Just being extra cautious with his surgically-repaired ankle. He plans to switch back to the Jordan 1 cleats that he had been wearing.”

The ankle previously injured is named the “bionic ankle.” When suffering the injury in 2020, Prescott got a tightrope surgery that made it difficult to have another high ankle sprain moving forward.

Prescott will now enter his second straight season potentially dealing with some kind of injury. After recovering from his season-ending ankle problem heading into 2021 camp, a should issue also arose. Offseason surgery was required but Prescott has recovered.

Now with another potential ankle injury popping up, something to watch going forward in Dallas.
