Dak Prescott has traveled with the team to New York, with the Dallas Cowboys scheduled to play on Monday Night Football against the Giants. However, he will not be suiting up, still rehabbing a thumb injury suffered during the season opener.

While the worst was originally feared and Prescott was expected to miss a significant amount of time, the quarterback has sped up the process. But everybody in the Cowboys organization has remained hopeful their franchise cornerstone would return sooner rather than later. With Monday’s update, that thought process remains true.

ESPN’s Todd Archer said Prescott will have his surgery stitches removed before Dallas takes the field against New York. Even with the progress made, he will be inactive during the primetime matchup.

“Dak Prescott is scheduled to have the stitches removed from his surgically repaired right thumb before tonight’s game,” Archer said. “His return to action is predicated on his grip strength but he is continuing to make progress.”

Since then, Archer has revealed that Prescott has gone through with the transaction has been done. Now, the road to recovery has taken another positive step forward. If Prescott can return next week, it will be another divisional matchup against the Washington Commanders.

More on Dak Prescott, Dallas quarterback situation

Cooper Rush will start in place of Prescott once again, hoping to get another win. Dallas was able to squeak one out against Cincinnati last week, getting back to a .500 record. If Rush can pull one off against New York, it will be a success for the Cowboys.

Prescott may also be viewed as the franchise quarterback but owner and general manager Jerry Jones wouldn’t totally be opposed to a quarterback competition. He compared the situation to the one Prescott himself went through to be the starter, taking over for Tony Romo as a rookie.

“Of course we want Dak to be here next week. … But Dak and I want Rush to lead the team to a victory here and get another win, and that’s the only way to look at it. Looking back when Dak was playing instead of Tony, it was game by game. .. It was actually play by play, almost series by series,” stated Jones, via Machota. “So do I think that it’s possible for Rush to come in here and play at a level the way Prescott did when he took over for Romo? Yes I do. Yes I do. I certainly think that’s possible.”
